Angel Gomes targeted by top Premier League clubs again after snubbing transfer offers

Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes has flourished since leaving the Premier League giants back in 2020 and is now on the radar of clubs back in England

Lille are said to be braced for further offers from clubs interested in former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes.

The 24-year-old playmaker is enjoying a stellar period for club and country after being handed his first senior England caps earlier this month. And his progress has not gone unnoticed in England, where clubs are lining up.

Gomes came through the academy ranks at Old Trafford before moving to France in 2020 but has remained on the radar of several clubs, with a new report now claiming some competing in the Champions League are preparing offers for the midfield maestro.

While no clubs are named, The Telegraph report that teams from the Premier League and Europe are monitoring Gomes. Lille are not in a position of strength, either, given his contract only runs until 2025.

That means Gomes would be free to speak with clubs from overseas in January about a Bosman move next summer, though Lille could attempt to try and cash in during the winter transfer window to avoid such a scenario.

The player himself revealed that he had already snubbed offers to return to England in the years since his Old Trafford exit - and while he was coy on the matter, he certainly didn't rule out a move to the Premier League.

“I have … but I believe everything will happen naturally and at its own time and I am really chilled,” Gomes said back in the summer when he was asked about English interest.

“So, if something was to come up that did make sense, you never know in football…”

Gomes' former academy coach at United, Nicky Butt, said earlier this month that he felt the talented Carrington graduate was good enough to play for some of the world's top clubs, including United's arch-rivals, Manchester City.

“I think he can do better than some of the teams that will be in for him in the Premier League,” Butt told the PA news agency. “The Spanish league is written all over for Angel. He could play in the Premier League easily. He could play for City tomorrow.

“When Angel left United, I said to him, ‘You’re going to go on and have an unbelievable career and I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up playing against Manchester United for Barcelona or Real Madrid in the next five, six, seven years’, because he was that good. And I’m not just saying that now that he’s made his England debut, I genuinely thought that a long time ago.

“He could play in the Premier League easily. He could play for [Man] City tomorrow. But then you put him in at Man United at the minute and he’s got to have the legs to go through the centre of midfield where there’s a massive gap, people run through the Man United midfield like you wouldn’t believe. Then it’s a really difficult game for him.”
