Premier League issue statement as Aston Villa fume over major VAR controversy
Donyell Malen thought he'd scored his first Aston Villa goal to equalise against Wolves, but VAR confirmed the on-field decision of no goal, leaving the away side furious
by Nathan Ridley · The MirrorThe Premier League have released a statement explaining why Aston Villa were controversially disallowed a goal against Wolves.
Villa were 1-0 down in the second half at Molineux when new £21.5million signing Donyell Malen converted a low cross from John McGinn, although the linesman immediately raised his flag. VAR then confirmed the decision as despite not touching the ball, Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers was deemed to have interfered with play while being in an offside position.
A statement from the Premier League's Match Centre account on X read: "The referees call of no goal due to an offside offence is checked and confirmed by VAR – with Rogers in an offside position and deemed to be impacting the ability of Semedo to play or challenge for the ball."
