Rory McIlroy has joined Tiger Woods in lauding European Ryder Cup star Ludvig Aberg after the Swede played a leading role on the opening night of TGL.

Aberg was the star of the show as Woods and McIlroy's tech-infused golf league debuted in Florida on Tuesday, making a pair of brilliant putts as The Bay cruised to a 9-2 victory over New York at SoFi Center.

Both McIlroy and Woods, whose company TMRW Sports created the TGL concept, spent time in the commentary booth, and they took the opportunity to comment on the 25-year-old's brilliance. McIlroy revelled in the fact Aberg is set to be a fixture in the European Ryder Cup team for years to come.

"Going into the Ryder Cup in 2023, people thought Ludvig was a questionable pick," McIlroy said. "He hadn't been around, he had only been a pro for a few months. He was absolutely incredible in the Ryder Cup. I keep saying to everyone, 'I'm glad he's European.' I'm glad he's on my team."

Aberg has enjoyed a stratospheric rise over the past two years. After starring at the collegiate level in the United States, he turned professional in June 2023, and within a few short months, he claimed his first DP World Tour victory.

His arrival on the professional scene was so impressive that Luke Donald made Aberg a captain's pick for the Ryder Cup in Rome. Aberg justified his selection with an excellent performance, making significant contributions as Europe regained the trophy.

And he has gone from strength to strength since, claiming his first win on the PGA Tour, finishing second at The Masters, and rising to No. 6 in the Offical World Golf Ranking.

Woods says he sees no reason why Aberg cannot cement his place as one of the best players on the planet for years to come, with the 15-time major champion hailing the Scandinavian's swing.

"It's so simple. Just straight up, straight down. [Aberg] doesn't do anything wrong in his golf swing," Woods said. "There's no little things that he does, and there's nothing that's not going to stop him from being one of the world's best."

With another Ryder Cup looming on the horizon in September and chances to win his first major title fast approaching, TGL is not at the top of Aberg's list of priorities. But he was blown away by the experience of playing in the league's inaugural match.

"It was amazing, I think it's the future of golf, and it's really cool to be a part of," he said in the post-match press conference. I'm always so jealous of basketball and football guys that they get to do this so much more than we do. It's cool playing in a stadium. The crowd gets going a little bit more.

"The energy is different from a regular golf tournament. But it's so much fun and gets you going a little bit more. It's just the whole stadium environment, having the crowd going and you have the speakers really loud.

"Obviously, we don't really have that on the golf course. I think it's really cool to be in a crowded environment where the people are literally on top of you and screaming. There's a lot of betting going on, so you'll hear some guy saying, don't miss it, don't do that.

"I think that's really cool. When I watch other sports, that's what I really like, and I'm definitely looking forward to playing more of these so I can experience that a lot more this season."
