One of two Grade 1 races on Thursday is the Ryanair Steeple Chase, where Protektorat will aim to defend his title after a stellar performance in last year's event. However, the Dan Skelton-trained horse has had a mixed record since that victory, winning only one of his last four starts. His most recent triumph came in January at Windsor, where he demolished the competition by an impressive 23 lengths. Despite this, Protektorat has been defeated by Jonbon at Aintree, Il Ridoto at Cheltenham in November, and Djelo at Huntingdon.

This race is open to horses aged five and above with a rating of 130 or higher, running over an intermediate distance of two miles, four-and-a-half furlongs. While some consider it a stepping stone to Friday’s prestigious Gold Cup, the Ryanair Steeple Chase remains a highly competitive and exciting event in its own right.
