Crystal Palace wanted a penalty for Virgil van Dijk's tug on Marc Guehi

Premier League statement details why Liverpool didn't concede penalty in Crystal Palace win

VAR David Coote decided there was not enough in tangle between Virgil van Dijk and Marc Guehi for Crystal Palace to be awarded a penalty against Liverpool at Selhurst Park

The Premier League have immediately explained why Virgil van Dijk did not concede a penalty late in Liverpool’s 1-0 win away to Crystal Palace.

Dutch defender Van Dijk was seen grappling with Palace and England star Marc Guehi in the box but the decision was reviewed by the video assistant referee David Coote, who decided there was nothing worth penalising in the altercation.

Diogo Jota’s early goal was enough for Arne Slot’s team to seal their latest win at Selhurst Park but Palace boss Oliver Glasner was furious on the touchline when Guehi went to ground in the 71st minute and ref Simon Hooper did not point to the spot.

But the Premier League’s match centre account on social media quickly explained the process.

“The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge by van Dijk on Guehi is checked and confirmed by VAR - deeming that the challenge was not sustained holding and had no impact on the play,” it said.

Van Dijk was named man of the match afterwards and told TNT Sports: "It is hard to come here. The results over the years are tight and close.

"I think obviously we scored a fantastic goal. We could have done better in the second half, but we knew they'd come out with a bit of pressure on the ball. It ends our run on a high before the internationals.

"We keep going and we keep working. We are never satisfied. We needed Alli [Alisson] twice, but that is what we try to avoid. Everyone is contributing to clean sheets.

"I think there is always expectations towards different teams - whatever the outside world thinks of us we don't really care. We want to try to challenge, compete, win and be successful."

Liverpool have won each of their first four away league games to begin a season for just the third time after 1990-91 and 2019-20 with Slot now enjoying nine wins from his opening 10 fixtures in all competitions since replacing Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

The win also means Liverpool are now four points clear at the top ahead of the 3pm kick offs.
