Alex Pereira will look to successfully defend his light-heavyweight title for a third time when he faces top contender Khalil Rountree Jr at UFC 307

by · The Mirror

UFC light-heavyweight champion Alex Pereira returns to the cage as he aims to successfully defend his title for a third time against Khalil Rountree Jr.

'Poatan' comes into the clash off the back of a devastating second round TKO victory against Jiri Prochazka back in June. The Brazilian kickboxing veteran has become a global star since signing with the UFC back in 2021. Pereira, 37, has already become a two-division champion despite having only nine fights in the promotion. As for Rountree Jr, the American is unbeaten in five fights and earned his crack at the UFC gold after defeating Anthony Smith in December.

There is plenty of action throughout the card including another title fight between Raquel Pennington and Julianna Pena, which will serve as the co-main event. UFC 307 also sees MMA legend Jose Aldo compete inside the cage for the 41st time when he faces Mario Bautista. The Brazilian originally retired from the sport in 2022, but cut his departure short as he returned to the octagon earlier this year in a bid to become a world champion once again. Here is everything you need to know about tonight's fights...

Alex Pereira: “Usually after the fights I say want to take some time, give a little gap. Then I come back to the gym, and I start training, and I start seeing where my evolution lies and see that I got to keep doing this more often. The body’s good. Things happen sometimes here and there. That’s the price to be fighting often. But I think everything is good. We’ve got great results from it.” He added: “Khalil’s up there. You can’t deny that any more. For all the work he’s put in, he is a great striker in this organisation. He got the shot, and I am grateful (to fight him).”

Khalil Rountree Jr: “It’s definitely just a testament to hard work, dedication, staying focused and keeping the vision alive. Now I’m here and it just feels good. I’m glad I’m here. I see the work it took to get here, and I’m prepared. I’m a unique challenge because I’m a unique fighter and I bring a different skillset to the challenge. I think my style matches up perfectly, I think my style gives me a high chance of winning, and not to really compare to the other guys, but it’s my time.”
