Everton captain James Tarkowski in confrontation with Man Utd stars after VAR controversy
James Tarkowski was involved in an angry confrontation with a group of Manchester United players following Everton's thrilling draw with the Red Devils, which was clouded by a controversial VAR call
by Jacob Leeks · The MirrorEverton captain James Tarkowski confronted a group of Manchester United players following the thrilling draw between the two sides.
The Toffees had been 2-0 up entering the final 20 minutes thanks to goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure. But Bruno Fernandes netted a brilliant free-kick before Manuel Ugarte volleyed in an equaliser with 10 minutes to go.
Everton saw the chance to win the game snatched away from them when referee Andy Madley overturned his decision to award the hosts a penalty. Ashley Young had been brought down by Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, with Madley immediately pointing to the spot.
VAR intervened though and Madley overturned his call. United put late pressure on Everton but ran out of time to find a winner, with Madley booed off the pitch by angry home fans, having been confronted by Young.
Tarkowski was also left furious, having played all 90 minutes of the thrilling game. His frustrations spilled over in a testy confrontation with a group of United players.
Casemiro, Leny Yoro, Alejandro Garnacho and Christien Eriksen were all involved in the incident, which took place in front of the visiting fans. Everton captain Seamus Coleman ran over from the bench to back Tarkowski up.
The confrontation eventually bubbled out, with Everton left disappointed to have only come away with a point. But boss David Moyes insisted his side could be pleased with their performance.
"I think it should have been more. When we were 2-0 up we had a couple of chances to make it three. Didn't quite take it, we were playing well. But them getting the goal gave them the momentum," he told TNT Sports.
HAVE YOUR SAY! Who was man of the match in Everton's draw with Manchester United? Comment below.
"We were up against a good side. I know their position, but they have a tradition of winning games. Getting a point today isn't the worst result but it feels disappointing having been 2-0 up.
"We probably done as well as we could do. Man United had nothing to lose but to have a go. The free-kick decisions were probably the correct decisions which led to the goal. But if you look at the similar decisions the referee didn't give us in the first-half, I find it difficult to understand.
"I've had a look at it [the penalty] and he undoubtedly pulls his jersey. I thought the on-field decision was correct. I'm surprised it was asked to go to VAR. It looked difficult to change your mind. When they go to VAR it's as if the people seeing it on the tele understand more.
"I'm not going to go too into it but that decision didn't go for us. We have to get more points. Today's result was a good result, we gave a way a couple of poor goals."
