Ex-Liverpool star identifies potential Mohamed Salah replacement after contract bombshell
Mohamed Salah could leave Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the season and former Reds striker Emile Heskey has identified a potential replacement for the forward
by Matthew Cooper · The MirrorLiverpool have been urged to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo if Mohamed Salah does leave the club at the end of the season.
Salah will be out of contract in the summer and his future is in major doubt after he admitted he was "probably more out than in" after Liverpool's win over Southampton. "We are almost in December and I haven't received any offers yet to stay in the club," he said.
"I'm probably more out than in. You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven't received anything yet about my future. I love the fans. The fans love me.
"In the end it is not in my hands or the fans' hands. Let's wait and see. I'm not going to retire soon so I’m just playing, focusing on the season and I'm trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well. I'm disappointed but we will see."
If Salah does end up departing, Liverpool will lose a player who has scored more than 20 goals every season since he was signed from Roma in 2017. However, former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey believes Mbeumo could help fill that void.
Mbeumo has starred for Brentford so far this season, with only Erling Haaland and Salah scoring more than his eight Premier League goals, and Heskey feels the 25-year-old would be a good fit at Anfield.
"Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo is a player I like a lot," Heskey told FourFourTwo on behalf of William Hill. "He's fantastic on the ball, can beat a man and he scores a lot of goals for a team that doesn't compete right at the top end of the league.
"In a top side, he could score loads of goals. It's difficult with Mo Salah because who else is giving you those numbers? We want more from Mo at times, but when someone is giving you 20 goals a season, pretty much every season, with 30-plus goal contributions, it's something special.
"Nobody else in the league is giving you those numbers, in terms of both goals and assists. So Liverpool have a huge job on their hands in finding someone who can replace Salah when he leaves – whenever that might be."
