Gary Neville slammed for 'unbearable' Newcastle reaction in Carabao Cup final win
Manchester United legend Gary Neville was on commentary as Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final and his response to Alexander Isak's goal has drawn criticism
by Matthew Cooper · The MirrorGary Neville has been criticised for his reaction to Alexander Isak's goal as Newcastle beat Liverpool to win the Carabao Cup.
Isak put Newcastle 2-0 up in the final with a well-taken finish after Jacob Murphy headed the ball into his path, prompting Neville to scream: "Ohhhhhhhhhh". Neville's reaction was reminiscent of his infamous scream after Fernando Torres scored against Barcelona back in 2012 to earn Chelsea a spot in the Champions League final.
However, fans were not impressed, with one writing: "I like Gary Neville in many repects but his constant talking/quipping ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ ing over the commentator esp in in key moments is highly irritating."
A second added: "Yet again. Gary Neville got to do his unnecessary scream to get his voice heard. He is unbearable." A third wrote: "Can you get Gary Neville to take the microphone away from his mouth before he makes that noise for every single goal?"
Neville did go on to label Isak's goal "special", with the strike earning Newcastle their first major trophy since 1969. "This is really special," he said on Sky Sports. "They [the Newcastle fans] are almost crying, I'm almost crying for them. Alexander Isak, what a finish. What a game."
Dan Burn had earlier put Newcastle ahead with a brilliant header from a Kieran Trippier corner, while Federico Chiesa got one back for Liverpool in added time after being sent through on goal by Harvey Elliott.
However, it was too little too late for Liverpool and Newcastle claimed a memorable victory at Wembley. Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes was overcome with emotion after the final whistle was blown, branding the win "unbelievable".
"It's all for these fans," Guimaraes told Sky Sports. They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history. We can now say we are the champions again. This is one of the best days of my life.
"I don't have any words. It's the best day of my life. For them [the fans] it's like the World Cup. People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club and it's one of the best days. This is unbelievable.
"This is my second home. We are making history. Some day when I leave this club I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to [Alan] Shearer. He text me before the game. I'm so emotional today."
