Alan Shearer doesn't hold back in rant on 'weak' Man City after Feyenoord embarrassment

Manchester City’s crisis continued in their Champions League clash against Feyenoord after racing into a 3-0 lead against the Dutch side only to be pegged back after a late collapse

by · The Mirror

Alan Shearer has been left baffled by “weak” Manchester City’s mentality as he slammed their Feyenoord collapse.

The reigning Premier League champions looked to be en route to a comfortable win as a brace from Erling Haaland and Ilkay Gundogan’s goal put them in firm control. But the Dutch side rallied late on to secure the most unlikely of draws.

It sees City become the first side in Champions League history to lead by three goals after the 75th minute and fail to win. Pep Guardiola’s side are now six without a win in all competitions after five defeats in a row.

And ex-Premier League striker Shearer has not held back on his scathing assessment of City and their current performances. Speaking to TNT Sports, he said: “Conceding the way City at the weekend and three again this weekend they look weak, they look light, they look frail.

“What you cannot do is give them a little bit of hope. That is what they did. Even with two minutes to go and 3-2 up, they take a quick free-kick. Why? Kill the game. They were in such a comfortable position.”

City’s collapse against Feyenoord leaves them in a very tricky position regarding their qualification for the knockout rounds. They languish in 15th - two points off of the automatic qualification spots with just three games to come against Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge.

Away from Shearer, ex-City defenders Gael Clichy and Stuart Pearce were left stunned after watching the collapse. Speaking on Amazon Prime, the Frenchman said: “I am lost for words.

“Going forward you need to be given freedom but for defenders there are rules you must follow. When you are defending and there is no pressure on the ball you can't have your line flat. From a very comfortable game, 3-0 up, everyone thinking about Liverpool on Sunday, and now at 3-3, that will feel like a defeat.”

Pearce added: “All the things we spoke about before the match, they were all there in the second half. The high line, individual errors. That's what has lost them the lead. I suspect there will be one or two home truths in the dressing room.

“Credit to Feyenoord. They kept going and kept going and their fans and celebrating like they have won the league.”
