Jamie Carragher responds after being criticised over David Coote video scandal

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has responded to a social media post from a fan in the wake of the video scandal involving Premier League referee David Coote and comments he made about Jurgen Klopp

by · The Mirror

Jamie Carragher his hit back at a fan on social media who seemingly questioned the Liverpool legend's silence following the David Coote scandal.

The Premier League was rocked earlier this week after a shocking video of Coote surfaced on social media. In the clip, Coote calls former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp a "German c***" and the official has already been suspended by the PGMOL.

In the wake of reports claiming Coote could quit before he is sacked as the video is investigated, the incident has been discussed heavily on social media and on television by various people in the industry.

Carragher, one of Sky Sports' most prominent pundit, has yet to comment publicly. And he took offence to a post from one fan on X who accused him and his colleague, Gary Neville, of being "fully fledged sell outs" amid their silence.

Posting on the X platform, Carragher responded: "No, what we have learned is you & plenty of others are desperate for attention by throwing our names in your tweets about any controversy in football.

"I gave my opinion on it @WeAreTheOverlap yesterday morning, it drops tomorrow [Thursday]. I’m sure you’ll see it!"

Coote's career is believed to be in major jeopardy and he has been the subject of fierce criticism in the wake of the video, which is a few years old. His former colleague Dermot Gallagher has defended him from accusations of bias, though, following his comments.

Gallagher said: "I refereed for 46 years, and most of my decisions are based on instinct; you have a knowledge of the laws of the game, the experience that you built up over the years.

"You see an incident and act instinctively, it's like driving a car, you see a red light, you don't think ‘change gear, brake, stop’. You just do it. I don't think any referee has any chance to think like that [biased against certain clubs], what I would say is that at the top level, the scrutiny is so intense - it's unbelievable."

He went on to add that Coote would have been rumbled if he was being biased in any way, explaining: "The referees are so exposed to all kinds of things, if a decision isn't right. Every weekend, the key match incidents are looked at by an independent panel of ex-referees - that's how it's scrutinised, every referees performance is reviewed match-by-match-by-match.

"A referee, like David, has refereed on there for nine years, he wouldn't have survived at that level if he wasn't refereeing on a top level if he wasn't making high profile, good decisions."
