Arsenal transfer news: Mikel Arteta gives striker update as Mathys Tel move collapses

Arsenal were the Premier League's big winners on Sunday, beating Manchester City 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium, and now attention turns to the impending transfer deadline

by · The Mirror

Arsenal ended the weekend on the highest of highs after hammering Manchester City, but they may still have a busy Monday in store.

Four second-half goals helped Mikel Arteta's team hand Pep Guardiola his joint-heaviest Premier League defeat. The 5-1 win featured five different scorers for the Gunners, with the four goal margin of victory matching Spurs' 4-0 win at the Etihad Staidum back in November,

Arsenal's focus will quickly turn elsewhere, though. The transfer window slams shut at 11pm, and Arteta hasn't ruled out making further additions after losing Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus to injury.

Arteta's post-match comments are just part of the story, though, as the window ticks into its final few hours. Here are Mirror Football's latest lines from North London.

Arteta responds to transfer question

Mikel Arteta could yet add to his Arsenal squad before 11pm on Monday, and attention will now turn back to the transfer market. Speaking after Sunday's win, Arteta didn't rule out another new face, having got the job done on the pitch.

"I don't know. I have been focused in the last 24 hours on what we needed to do to beat Man City," Arteta told Sky Sports. "Intention, we have been clear from every angle of what we want to do."

Arsenal have already seen a bid knocked back for Ollie Watkins, but the Aston Villa man isn't the only man to have been linked. By this time tomorrow, we'll know if Arteta has been successful.

Tel's Man Utd move collapses

Manchester United appeared to be Arsenal's main rivals for Mathys Tel, but multiple reports claim United's move for the forward has collapsed. According to The Mail, the key sticking point concerned payment terms, with United and Tel's current club Bayern Munich unable to reach an agreemnt.

With Tel also rejecting Tottenham, his options are somewhat limited. Arsenal and Chelsea aren't out of the race, though, and he could yet finish the season at Bayern.

Tel sat out Bayern's weekend victory over Holstein Kiel, but sporting director Christoph Freund indicated it is still possible the 19-year-old stays put. "We decided together with him yesterday that there's a lot on his mind, so it makes no sense for him to be involved today," Freund said.

Garcia release clause to increase

Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia has been linked with an Arsenal switch, but says he is calm over speculation. According to Mundo Deportivo (via football.london), the Spaniard's release clause will soon climb to £25m, but he hasn't ruled out an eventual exit.

"I am a very cold person in every sense and I think that this attitude helps me," Garcia told Radio Marca. "I am very calm at Espanyol, with an opportunity that I have been waiting for a long time."

Garcia, 23, is under contract at Espanyol until 2028. He has been an ever-present in La Liga this season, and kept Real Madrid at bay on Saturday as his team boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win against the league leaders.
