Ruben Amorim sends clear demand to Man Utd chiefs on transfer role after Erik ten Hag veto

Ruben Amorim will oversee his first transfer window as Manchester United boss in just over a month’s time and has already shared his stance after Erik ten Hag stumbled into issues

Ruben Amorim has issued a simple transfer demand to Manchester United chiefs - he wants the final say.

The Portuguese has been appointed as the Red Devils’ new manager following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. He will oversee his first game at the helm this weekend as United travel to newly-promoted Ipswich.

And while the attention will remain on Amorim’s task to get the club back on track, transfers have also been on the agenda. There is just over a month to go until the January transfer window opens.

The Red Devils will be aiming to bolster their side, albeit funds are set to be limited after a summer splurge under previous boss Ten Hag. Amorim has now spoken out on any potential transfers and claims he wants to be the deciding voice.

Speaking at his introductory press conference, he said: “I think it has to be [done] all together, because if you are a coach that comes in here and already chose the players, it could be wrong because this is a football club that will be here for a long time and you as a coach, you don’t know that.

“So you have to work all together and for that we have to improve the process of recruitment. The data, the profile of the players we want but I have to have a strong position on that because I’m the coach and I know how to play so I think it’s all together but the final word, as you can say, should be with the manager – not just because it is your right but because it is your responsibility, because in the end they will ask you about the results, is to me.

“I think it’s all together, improve the process of recruitment, I have to understand the league, that is important and then when everything is aligned, everybody is on the same page, we can buy and sell players.”

Amorim’s comments come after his predecessor Ten Hag stumbled into issues on the transfer front. The Dutchman initially had plenty of control upon his arrival.

It was claimed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe spearheaded talks to reduce that influence amid negotiations regarding Ten Hag’s new deal. It was previously claimed that he also had a veto both on incoming and outgoing deals.

Despite that, this summer’s recruitment still appeared to be spearheaded by Ten Hag. Players who had previously played under him including Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee were all signed.

Amorim could yet follow suit with United linked with some of his former Sporting Lisbon players. Viktor Gyokeres, Ousmane Diomande and Geovany Quenda are all reportedly under consideration.
