Cole Palmer leaves England camp as Chelsea confirm huge injury blow
Chelsea star Cole Palmer is to miss out on Thomas Tuchel's first international break in charge of the England side after picking up an injury ahead of the Blues' clash against Arsenal
by Scott Trotter · The MirrorCole Palmer has returned to Chelsea from the England camp due to injury, per the west London club. The Blues' talismanic figure did not feature against Arsenal after picking up ane injury in training on Saturday.
Thomas Tuchel will not be afforded the opportunity to utilise England's player of the year for his first matches in charge of the Three Lions. England said the player 'remains with Chelsea for further assessment on an injury sustained in training ahead of his club's fixture at Arsenal last Sunday'.
Morgan Gibbs-White has already reported for duty after being called up on Sunday. The Nottingham Forest creator was a surprise omission from Tuchel's squad but was swiftly asked to join the group after Palmer's absence against the Gunners.
Following defeat to Mikel Arteta's side, Enzo Maresca revealed Palmer would undergo a scan on Monday and not join up with England. The Italian suggested he would be happy for the former Manchester City ace to have a break, though there was no immediate announcement of a withdrawl.
"His injury was from yesterday’s session, it’s a muscular problem," said Maresca. "He needs a scan, and it is planned for tomorrow [Monday] morning.
"I hope he can be back for our next game, but we need to wait for a scan. We don’t wish players injury, but probably in Cole’s case in this moment it will give him some rest, physically and mentally, it could be good."
Tuesday saw ex-Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel lead his England squad for training. Under-21s trio Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Adam Wharton and Liam Delap were also involved in the session at St. George's Park.
The Three Lions have already seen one of the first changes under their new boss. Tuchel opted for his side to train in the afternoon, as opposed to the morning sessions preferred by former boss Gareth Southgate.
The late afternoon training is much closer to the 7.45pm kick-off times England face over the next week or so. Tuchel is preparing his face Albania and Latvia in World Cup qualification as he takes charge of his first matches since being appointed as England boss.
The German coach will utilise mornings to hold meetings with his players, host squad get-togethers and to undertake one-on-one sessions. Of greater surprise were some of Tuchel's call-ups.
There was a degree of consternation over Jordan Henderson in particular as he returned to the England fold. Marcus Rashford was also called upon, as was Newcastle United defender Dan Burn, for the first time.
"I'm trying to take it camp by camp at the minute. I just want to make a big impression and try and make the next camp," said the Carabao Cup winner.
"But obviously it's every kid's dream to play in a World Cup or even to play for your country, so to know I've got that opportunity, if I take it, it's special."
