UEFA make major Julian Alvarez Atletico Madrid penalty statement as Arsenal wait

UEFA have revealed they will hold talks with lawmakers after the controversial decision to rule out Julian Alvarez's penalty in Atletico Madrid's defeat to Real Madrid. The former Manchester City striker was deemed to have twice made contact with the ball during the penalty shootout against their city rivals.

As a result, Los Blancos were handed the advantage in the lottery after Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham both converted their efforts, with Alexander Sorloth answering back with Atletico's first penalty.

Lucas Vasquez saw his effort saved by Jan Oblak but Marcos Alonso squandered the decisive effort as Antonio Rudiger squirmed his effort home to book their place in the quarter-finals against Arsenal.

But the tie was overshadowed by the incident involving Alvarez, which saw the video assistant referee intervene. But the football governing body has admitted they will enter discussions over a change following the unintentional two contacts.

In a statement, the footballing body said: "Atlético de Madrid enquired with UEFA over the incident, which led to the disallowance of the kick from the penalty mark taken by Julián Alvarez at the end of yesterday’s UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid.

"Although minimal, the player made contact with the ball using his standing foot before kicking it. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR had to call the referee signalling that the goal should be disallowed.

"UEFA will enter discussions with FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rule should be reviewed in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentional."

IFAB is the International Football Association Board, which sets the laws of football.Law 14.1 states the kicker must not play the ball again until it has touched another player, with an indirect free-kick the sanction imposed when such an offence happens during regulation time.
