Matheus Cunha hands Arsenal major transfer boost with future bombshell
by Amie Wilson · football.londonArsenal transfer target Matheus Cunha has said that he is looking to take the next step of his career in the summer window after staying loyal to Wolves throughout January.
The forward has been a key player at Molineux this season. In 29 appearances in all competitions, he has scored 15 goals and provided four assists. Back in January it was reported that Arsenal were showing an interest in Cunha.
Amid the speculation over his future, he put pen-to-paper on a new four-year contract at the club. However, it is said that the deal includes a release clause that is worth around £62 million and can be triggered in the summer transfer window.
Cunha himself has now opened up on the speculation around his future in January and a possible summer transfer.
“I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it,” he told the Guardian. “Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.
“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”
Wolves currently sit in 17th place in the Premier League table but are nine points clear of both Ipswich Town and Leicester City with nine matches of the season remaining. Cunha himself is currently serving a four-match ban, following his red card in the FA Cup fifth round against AFC Bournemouth.
He will return to action when Wolves take on Tottenham Hotspur at Molineux on Sunday, 13 April (2pm kick-off).
Arsenal are expected to strengthen their attacking options in the summer, especially given the lack of strikers currently available to Mikel Arteta. Injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus mean that they are without a recognised striker for the remainder of the season.
