Tottenham in much better boat than Man Utd as Gary Lineker gives Spurs fans hope

Gary Lineker believes Tottenham are closer to moving in the right direction than Manchester United, despite the vast list of problems Ange Postecoglou is facing.

Both clubs have experienced a torrid Premier League season up to now. United are currently languishing in 13th place on just 26 points, while Spurs are faring even worse in 15th with 24 points, in light of their 3-2 defeat to Everton on Sunday.

The pressure is therefore mounting on their respective managers, Ruben Amorim and Postecoglou, despite the former spending considerably less time at the helm. Amorim admitted his side could well be the “worst” in the club’s history after their 3-1 home defeat to Brighton.

Spurs, meanwhile, have suffered two Premier League defeats in a row, meaning they have lost a whopping 12 league games this season. Yet despite the grim circumstances both managers are faced with, Match of the Day presenter Lineker claims Spurs are still in a better position than the Red Devils.

The former Tottenham striker, along with his colleagues Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, gave the north Londoners the edge when asked which club is closer to where they want to be in the long term, even with all the animosity towards club chairman Daniel Levy.

Lineker said on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast: “I think if you had everyone fit then Tottenham are in a better place than Manchester United. I think if I look at the overall squad then they’ve probably got a little bit more than United.”

He added: “United need to do more in the transfer market. Obviously both of them are in a bit of a rut at the present,” before Shearer chimed in with: “I wouldn’t disagree with that. If they ever get their players back to fitness, they’re slightly better than Manchester United’s first XI.”

The pundits’ comments highlight the grim state of affairs at Old Trafford to be worse off than a 15th-placed side, while also scrutinising the Red Devils’ recruitment strategy. Even after spending around £200million on five new players in the summer, the team is still worse off than last season – which ended with the worst Premier League finish in the club's history.

Part of the reason for United’s struggles, with Amorim losing seven matches since arriving in November, is that none of the current players are actually his signings, meaning some of them are unable to play his brand of football. Should United persist with Amorim at the helm, it may take a few transfer windows before there is any major improvement.

Postecoglou, meanwhile, has had four windows to build his squad – which has been decimated by injuries this season. There are 11 first-team players currently sidelined – a common theme throughout the campaign – which has led sceptics to point the finger at Postecoglou’s physically-demanding tactics and Levy’s lack of recruitment.

The head coach has cut a dejected figure all season, saying after last week’s 2-1 north London derby loss: “It's how things are going at the moment. We were nowhere near where we want to be."
