'Should be intimidated' - Ange Postecoglou given Europa League verdict amid Spurs sack pressure
by Thomas Fair, football.london readers · football.londonTottenham Hotspur have overturned a first-leg defeat to secure progression in the Europa League, with key players making starts after recovering from injuries that have blighted their season - and some fans in the football.london comments section say that the performance has convinced them that the club can go all the way in the competition.
Spurs went into the tie with a one-goal disadvantage after a disappointing showing against AZ Alkmaar in the reverse fixture. Ange Postecoglou opted to start Wilson Odobert, who joined from Burnley last summer, and he could have no complaints with the results as Odobert scored his first two goals for the club in Europe.
James Maddison scored a third, and Spurs were able to ride out the pressure including a 68th minute goal from Peer Koopmeiners to secure the win and set up a date with Lyon in the quarter-finals. Postecoglou was full of praise for Odobert, saying: "Super pleased for him because he's worked awfully hard.
"I'd be surprised if I have to explain why I selected him, if you didn't see that today... I was excited when we signed him. He's one of these players who has the ability to take players on, find space, great technician and super pleased for him to get his goals. He's worked hard silently and to get back in the team."
Reader Mitchellitovich says: “Excellent win! Great call by Ange starting Odobert! I wanted to see Tel start. Spurs were really tight starting out. We really need a couple more truly clutch players that don’t get tense in big games. Unfortunately Ange either doesn’t value that or doesn’t know how to find that.
"We are definitely capable of winning the Europa League. I’m not saying we will, but there are now teams that Spurs should be intimidated by. And I like that most of the teams would prefer to avoid us. I am afraid of meeting Athletic Bilbao in the final in Bilbao.”
Commenter Davmid writes: “It was a good, if nervy, victory. The real Son finally showed up, though without his scoring boots. Odobert was superb, as was Bergvall (let’s just forget their little mistake). And we still have Bentancur and Deki to return. A win under great pressure that has lifted the mood.”
Marlon1 says: “There is no doubt we made a massive meal of AZ but it’s a result we should embrace, considering the pressure we were under. I was reminded at 2-0 how fluid we can be going forward, the team we were before the injuries, and we should have added more. The fact that we didn’t, and then conceded the most diabolical goal I’ve ever seen, was soooo irritating!
"It’s clear we are still fragile on confidence and we obviously need to improve, but that’s nowhere near Ange’s Tottenham, there’s huge scope for improvement. We need to remember that we can win this tournament, we were favourites at the start of the campaign for a reason!”
Ric4ever writes: “Ange, mate, great win - well done! Sonny, mate, cometh the hour...” RaveO agrees: “Just think what we can do when we get everyone fully fit and match sharp!”
