FIFA planning huge VAR overhaul that will delight Mikel Arteta amid Arsenal controversies

FIFA are hoping to develop an alternative system to VAR which would allow coaches to challenge a refereeing decision they deem to be incorrect.

That's according to French media outlet L'Equipe, who claim football's governing body is working on the Football Video Support (FVS) system. The proposed alternative would allow football coaches to challenge a refereeing decision, like they currently do in the sport of basketball.

It's an option being 'seriously considered' by FIFA, according to the report. The paper claims they're hopeful of obtaining permission from the board to continue trials for FVS.

It's an alternative system to VAR that allows coaches to challenge a referee's decision at least twice per game. Football Video Support (FVS) system was approved in March earlier this year by IFAB and has been tested in the Under-17 and Under-20 Women's World Cups.

"The experiences in these two competitions will be carefully analysed but so far we have not noticed anything unexpected," head of the FIFA referees committee, former official, Pierluigi Colina said.

"It is however essential to understand that the FVS is not the VAR," Colina was quick to point out. "Because of the small number of cameras used, the FVS will not allow to show what the VAR can show."

FIFA must now present a report to the board, who will give the experiment the green light for an extension, with a number of leagues already expressing an interest in taking part. As to which leagues they are, remains a mystery at this stage.

That being said, it's a proposal that Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta would likely welcome, having been on the receiving end of a number of controversial VAR decisions already this season.

Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard were both shown red cards after being adjudged to have kicked the ball away, while similar incidents this season have gone unpunished. William Saliba's red card against Bournemouth is another call which has come under scrutiny from the Arsenal fanbase.

Being able to challenge those calls, would be welcomed by some, while others believe VAR should be scrapped altogether.
