Arne Slot sends Liverpool Premier League title race message as Arsenal watch on
by Mark Wakefield · football.londonLiverpool boss Arne Slot has explained how his players are "refreshed" as the Premier League title race with Arsenal is set to resume.
The Gunners are 12 points behind the Merseyside club in the league table with nine matches left to play. The first of those fixtures sees Arsenal host Fulham at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, before Liverpool take on Everton 24 hours later.
Arsenal can close the gap on Liverpool to nine points for one day at least, provided they beat Fulham this evening. There are still nine matches left to play this season, including one which will see the Gunners go to Anfield in their third-from-last game of the campaign.
Mikel Arteta will have hope that they can still reduce the gap between themselves and Liverpool to stay in the race for the title. Arsenal also have the Champions League to look forward to this term, while the Reds were knocked out of the competition by Paris Saint-Germain before the international break.
Ahead of the midweek round of Premier League fixtures, Slot has explained why he and the Anfield outfit are relishing the next two months as they battle Arsenal to be crowned champions.
"Many of our players played important matches for their national teams one week ago. Everybody can understand the position we are in at the moment," Slot told reporters on Tuesday.
"We are so looking forward to these nine games. Our players are refreshed, in my opinion. It wasn't all negative.
"We played a [Carabao Cup] final against a very good Newcastle team and we got beaten by a very good PSG team [in the Champions League].
"I was proud of our performance against PSG. Maybe the best game we played this season, but unfortunately, we lost on penalties."
Slot added: "In the final stages of the season, every game matters. Nine finals but it is for every team.
"These games are very important for us, starting with Everton. Not only because it's the Merseyside derby but because we're in such a great position as well."
