Arsenal given green light to complete Mathys Tel transfer as Chelsea stance clear

by · football.london

Chelsea were linked with a move for Mathys Tel way back at the start of the January transfer window. The message back then was that he was not for sale.

However, now, with just five days of the transfer window remaining, that stance may very well have changed. Tel has been an unused substitute in three of the last four Bundesliga games, getting 45 minutes off the bench in the other match in which he laid on an assist.

Earlier on in the window, Bayern were unwilling to negotiate and Tel himself remained committed to the German giants, not angling for a move. However, the lack of game time may well have changed his view, with reports suggesting that the 19-year-old is ready to leave Munich for the Premier League.

A move to Chelsea may be difficult to complete, however, with SportBild reporting that Tel has made it clear that he does not want to move to Stamford Bridge. This is understood to be due to the competition for places in Enzo Maresca's squad.

That would leave the door open for other interested parties to make their move, with Arsenal amongst a host of other clubs keen on signing the young striker this month. Tottenham and Manchester United have also been credited with an interest.

Tel would certainly get more opportunities at Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta's forward options limited right now due to injuries to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. Arteta has openly admitted he would like to bring in a forward before the January transfer window shuts, but reiterated it would have to be a deal for "the right player".

Tel is highly regarded at Bayern Munich and the Bavarians would be reluctant to sell such a prized asset. Tel has openly admitted he sees Harry Kane as a "role model" and has been learning a huge amount from the England captain since his move from Spurs to the Allianz Arena in 2023.
