Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham already have long-term Son Heung-min solution
by Rob Guest · football.londonSon Heung-min's place in Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham team could potentially be at risk going into Thursday's Europa League fixture against Hoffenheim. At a time when Spurs are struggling on the pitch and are in desperate need of a win amid the mounting pressure on the head coach's shoulders, Son has been unable to hit top form and unfortunately looks a shadow of his former self right now.
Sunday's 3-2 defeat at Everton was a day to forget for all connected with the north London club as they were incredibly lucky to not trail by four or five goals at half-time following a dire first-half showing. The game may have panned out rather differently had Son converted after Dominic Calvert-Lewin's opening goal, though.
Usually a chance he would gobble up, the Spurs captain could only shoot tamely at Jordan Pickford from Dejan Kulusevski's pass. The chance was rather similar to the goal Son scored in the 4-0 win at Aston Villa last March, with the 32-year-old firing high into the roof of the net beyond Emiliano Martinez on that day as the team ran riot at Villa Park.
Hitting 17 goals in 35 Premier League games last season, Son only has six league goals to his name this term plus a further two in cup competitions. It has just not happened for the player in the 2024/25 campaign and Spurs really need to find an answer to the South Korea's current struggles as they bid to climb back up the Premier League table from their position of 15th.
There have been a number of times recently when Son has had very little impact on proceedings, with last weekend's defeat at Everton a prime example. However, it must also be pointed out that he wasn't the only senior star to struggle as fellow leader James Maddison also failed to influence the game for the visitors.
In regards to Son, his struggles can be seen from the fact that he's only scored in five of his 19 Premier League appearances this season. His ability to use his devastating pace and trickery to beat his man down the left flank is a big feature of his game but that has been lacking this season.
Perhaps in need of a breather at a time when injuries have hit Tottenham hard or certainly not helped on some occasions by having to play through the middle, Spurs have to find a way of getting Son back to the peak of his powers. Amid his woes at Goodison Park, Mikey Moore demonstrated in a 17-minute cameo at Goodison Park that he is the future of Tottenham and quite possibly the long-term solution to Son.
Introduced in the closing stages of the contest, the academy ace had a hand in Kulusevski's wonderful goal and he also swung in a sublime cross that Richarlison converted in the second minute of stoppage time to give Spurs hope. As well as playing a part in the two goals, the 17-year-old caught the eye with a very positive display down the left as he frightened the Everton backline with his pace, skill and direct running.
He was undoubtedly a real handful for the Toffees as he teamed up with Djed Spence on more than one occasion as they looked to open up the hosts. Very much a player Tottenham fans want to see get a sustained run in the starting XI, the calls for Moore to start have only got louder since his outing on Merseyside.
Postecoglou perhaps has no option no but to start him at Hoffenheim as he desperately looks to register the results to help save his Spurs job. Given Tottenham's current predicament, the fact Moore has no fear coupled with his ability to drive at his opponents and cause them problems is exactly what Postecoglou requires in his team right now.
As the teenager is a left-winger by trade, Son's place in the frontline may be at risk, especially with Richarlison possibly now in a position to start in Germany and take on Dominic Solanke's role in the front three. While of course the hope is that Son can rediscover his form and get back to scoring goals for Spurs on a consistent basis, Spurs are going to have to plan for the future at some point as their long-serving player turns 33 at the start of July.
As well as having Moore in their possession for the years ahead, Spurs also have Yang Min-hyeok and Wilson Odobert as additional options out wide on either flank. Due to the Yang needing to adapt to English football and Odobert's long-term injury, it may be from next season when Tottenham fans see more of the duo in action.
Moore is the player on the lips of all Tottenham supporters and all will want to see the teen sensation's playing time increase between now and May. Speaking ahead of Tottenham's Europa League fixture against Qarabag in September, Son was asked by football.london about Moore and the Spurs captain stated that the youngster can be "one of the top players".
"Yeah, he's a fantastic boy and obviously, I mean, he's coming from the academy. You as a club, you look after him even more," said Son. "Everybody is so welcoming and looking after him, so do I, because he's such a lovely kid and working hard every single day, coming with the first team with that age it's not easy, you know, like sometimes you're very shy.
"But he's showing good personality and working hard, which is very important to me. When you see the young players are working hard in the first team and you just want to help, you just want to help him. You know that as well when I was young, and now he's coaching at Manchester United, Ruud van Nistelrooy, he was helping me a lot in my Hamburg time.
"Now I want to be that guy as well, you know, just having him around me and just talking about things, because we are playing in a similar position that if I can help him a little bit with advice, then I'm always open to it.
"Mikey is also coming to me most of the times and asking questions, which is very fun. I enjoy talking to him. He's a fantastic boy and then I'm definitely sure that he can be a fantastic player. There's no doubt because he has such amazing quality.
"As we always say about young players, let's don't give him too much pressure on his shoulders. Just let's enjoy how he develops, how he improves every single day, every single season and as a fan, as supporters, we should just enjoy watching him and he will be, I think, one of the top players."
Moore is quite clearly the future of Tottenham, with Son certainly having a part to play in the youngster's development in the first team since joining forces together. Whereas one day Moore could eventually take on Son's role on a permanent basis, fans will be hoping that both can still play their part together over the coming years for Tottenham.
