Newcastle United vs Chelsea simulated to predict huge Premier League clash
by Lewis Barton · football.londonChelsea have a huge opportunity to strengthen their grip on a Champions League spot when they travel north to face Newcastle United this weekend.
It's been a fantastic week for Chelsea, with the Blues beating Liverpool 3-1 to claim a big three points in the Premier League before confirming their spot in the Conference League final with a win against Djurgarden. Enzo Maresca's side have now won five games on the bounce across all competitions for the first time since December, and the Blues will be desperate for another win later today against top-five challengers Newcastle.
Chelsea enter the weekend fifth in the Premier League, two points ahead of Nottingham Forest and joint on points with Newcastle. A win would take some heavy weight off the Blues' shoulders, but a defeat could potentially see them drop out of the Champions League spots, depending on results elsewhere.
Goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer secured a 2-1 win against Newcastle in the last league meeting between the two, but Eddie Howe's side did win 2-0 in the early stages of the Carabao Cup. So, how will Chelsea fare against the Magpies later today? Let's take a look.
Newcastle vs Chelsea score predicted
To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.
We predict that the Magpies could set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Tonali, Guimaraes, Willock; Murphy, Isak, Gordon.
We predict that the Blues could line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Sanchez; Caicedo, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Lavia, Fernandez; Madueke, Palmer, Neto; Jackson.
Chelsea were quick out of the gates at St. James' Park, and they almost went ahead in the opening two minutes when Moises Caicedo's long ball forward picked out the run of Noni Madueke, but the winger curled his shot onto the far post. A few chances fell Newcastle's way as the Magpies grew in confidence as the game went on, but Robert Sanchez made some great saves to keep the score level at half-time.
Two minutes after the restart, Chelsea managed to take the lead, with Levi Colwill heading a corner home at the far post. Then, just moments later, the Blues scored again to double their lead.
Madueke breezed past Kieran Trippier on the left before finding Cole Palmer on the edge of the box, and a lovely through ball allowed Nicolas Jackson to break into a dangerous position. The striker took the ball in his stride before taking aim, and his strike nestled in the far corner of the goal to make it 2-0.
Newcastle had the ball in the net in the 89th minute when Alexander Isak headed a cross in at the near post, but the flag was raised for offside, and the goal was ruled out. Newcastle were unable to find a goal as Chelsea defended well, with Maresca's side containing their winning form with a huge three points.
EA FC 25 predicted final score: Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea
