Arsenal rival has advantage in Viktor Gyokeres transfer battle - but it is not Man United
by Bruna Reis · football.londonViktor Gyokeres is among Arsenal's summer priorities, but a Champions League rival club currently holds an advantage in the race for his signature.
The 26-year-old striker has been strongly linked with a Premier League move for some time, as he continues to shine for Sporting Clube de Portugal. Arsenal's new sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to favour a move for the Swedish striker over Benjamin Sesko.
Reports suggest that Gyokeres is likely to prioritise a move to north London over Manchester United, despite their interest. However, Arsenal now face new competition from Atletico Madrid, and Nike could play a role in making the transfer happen.
According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Atletico Madrid have identified Gyokeres as a key target to strengthen their attack amid Antoine Griezmann’s dip in form. Manager Diego Simeone is reportedly eager to create a dream strike partnership between Julian Alvarez and Gyokeres.
Sportswear giant Nike reportedly views Gyokeres as 'one of the sensations of the moment' and is eager to see him join a club under their sponsorship.
The company is reportedly keen to avoid a repeat of the Cristiano Ronaldo situation, where their sponsored athlete wore Adidas kits while playing for Real Madrid.
It's claimed that Simeone is 'very excited' about the possibility of signing the 26-year-old.
Arsenal’s partnership with Adidas runs until 2030, while United’s deal with the German brand extends another decade.
Sporting boss Rui Borges recently hinted at Gyokeres’ possible departure and a fierce transfer battle for the striker is looking increasingly likely this summer.
"Viktor is a player... I think there are no words: it is unlikely that another player of his quality will emerge in our league over the next few years," Borges said last month.
"He is clearly above average. Sporting recognised his talent, and here we are. Fortunately, we have him at Sporting. We must make the most of the time we have with him because he is truly exceptional.
"I have said this before, and I will continue to say it: he brings a lot to the team, and his teammates are aware of what he contributes, which is why they look for him during games. The collective effort also plays a role, as no one can succeed alone.
"Viktor is a game-changer, and he will continue to be, whether with us or elsewhere. His quality is undeniable; it is phenomenal. He is the best in the league, clearly. There are no adjectives to describe Viktor. He is an extraordinary striker, very important to our team, he has helped the team to grow with confidence, quality of play, he passes it on to his team-mates."
