When Viktor Gyokeres could make Arsenal debut as Mikel Arteta welcomes striker to training
by Tom Canton · football.londonArsenal are expecting to announce the signing of Viktor Gyokeres very soon, as the club are close to finalising their summer recruitment. Despite the drawn-out discussions with Sporting CP, the two clubs have finally come to an agreement.
Andrea Berta has been in long discussions with the Portuguese side to secure the structure of a deal worth an initial €63.5million (£55million) plus €10million (£8.7million) in add-ons. The club are thought to be very pleased with the outcome, especially considering the close to £80million that Liverpool paid for Hugo Ekitike.
Gyokeres is expected to undergo a medical and complete transfer formalities before joining his new teammates. The team are currently in Singapore on their pre-season tour of Asia after having just beaten AC Milan in a 1-0 win.
They have two more games left of the tour, Newcastle on July 27 and Tottenham on July 31. They then fly back to London to play two more friendlies at the Emirates.
Villarreal on Wednesday, August 6, and then Athletic Club on Saturday, August 9. All this takes place a week before the Gunners' Premier League campaign kicks off against Manchester United on Sunday, August 17.
Realistically, there is only a very small chance that Gyokeres could have a role against Newcastle on Sunday. The medical still needs to be completed, and he needs to fly out to Asia and have the fitness and conditioning coaches give the green light after only training individually for some weeks.
Therefore, the most likely time we see Gyokeres make his unofficial debut is the mouth-watering North London Derby clash against Tottenham. Cristhian Mosquera, on the other hand, is already out in Singapore and has trained with his new teammates.
He has already been spotted having completed media with the club and has been spotted in Asia with his Spanish teammates by supporters. An official announcement of his arrival took place on Thursday.
