'What's the point?' - Ange Postecoglou sack verdict shifts after 16-year Tottenham low
by Thomas Fair, football.london readers · football.londonAnge Postecoglou will be spending the international break ruminating on yet another pre-break Spurs loss, after losing 2-0 to Fulham - and some 'Ange In' fans in the football.london comments section are beginning to lose faith that their head coach and his team will be able to turn things around and address the club's many issues.
Spurs went into this game off the back of a reversal in Europe, beating AZ Alkmaar and securing progression in the Europa League. A dull first half away at Craven Cottage gave way to late goals by Rodrigo Muniz and and Ryan Sessegnon, who rejoined Fulham last year after the expiry of his Spurs contract.
The result made for the 15th league loss this season, the club's worst record for 16 years, with some difficult games to go. Responding to the unwanted statistic, Postecoglou said: "I get [the fans'] disappointment. It's unacceptable to see 15 league defeats. It's nowhere near good enough, nowhere near the level we need to be and I understand the supporters' frustrations with that.
"Today wasn't so much about performance, it was just another day when we let a game get away from us that we shouldn't have. We weren't played off the park and I felt that up until the point they scored, we were the team that was getting on top.
"We had a couple of good chances to go 1-0 up and that would have put the pressure on them but it's happened too many times this year. We've given the opposition a lift into the game by conceding soft goals."
Some fans are losing the faith as the end of the season comes into view, regardless of complications like injuries. Reader Martinos says: "What's the point of ticking over when you lose all the time? What's the point of ticking over with a manager who doesn't have a clue what he's doing? What's the point of simply ticking over? If we wanted to tick over and were happy doing so we'd all support Oxford City. Get rid of Ange."
Commenter EssexSpur writes: "For the first time I am coming to the conclusion that Ange needs to go at the end of the season. He is putting everything into the Europa League, he doesn't seem to care about the Prem!"
Halestrap says: "The moment we go out of Europe, it's curtains for Ange, and he can have zero complaints. 15 defeats in the league. 15! Diabolical. The players seem to want to play for him, but unfortunately they still can't put in anything like consistent performances. Obviously the injuries have been a nightmare but there's enough quality that we should be getting better results."
Christo.cy writes: "I believe we must start looking at the mirror, and more specifically to our players. We speak all the time about the managers. Personally I don't believe in Ange. I believe his football is naive, very risky and lacks pragmatism! Also he was never able to show some consistency!
"However we must note that with our players performing like they did yesterday (and so many times this year), whatever you do, whatever system, we are doomed! Million dollar question is.. can our players actually do better or this is the top of their quality and we have to accept it?"
Jeffc00p says: "Having just watched an Eddie Howe-inspired Newcastle beat an overrated Liverpool, god how I want Spurs to finally win a trophy after all these years. But I just can't see it happening with this manager in charge."
Others say that it can't all be laid at Ange's feet. GREGE says: "Not all the coach's fault, Levy must take some of the blame. How many years without anything? Time for Levy and head office personnel to go."
Marlon 1 writes: "This is about a lack of leadership on the pitch in my opinion. Vic, Romero, Madders and Sonny do NOT project assured calm or maturity, they all come across as hyperactive, easily distracted moaners! Look, at the end of the day the onus was always on Fulham to do something because they’re at home and chasing European qualification.
"For us it keeps us ticking over with players getting minutes in their legs, but this makes us VERY disjointed. When we play Frankfurt it’s important Romero, Micky, Dom and Sonny have 90mins in them! No new injuries is a positive. We move on, albeit without the much needed confidence boost and a few days of negativity about how Ange doesn’t have a clue."
