Ange Postecoglou reacts to Djed Spence and James Maddison Thomas Tuchel England squad omission

Ange Postecoglou believes Djed Spence and James Maddison "will be in the frame" for Thomas Tuchel's England squad if they keep performing and working hard. The Tottenham duo were not included in the German's first squad as Three Lions boss for this month's international fixtures but teammate Dominic Solanke was selected.

Spence has made a huge impression since forcing his way into Postecoglou's plans in early December to become a key member of his starting XI. Wowing for Tottenham in the Premier League and Europa League, the full-back's name had come into conversation for the England squad for March's international fixtures against Albania and Latvia.

However, there was to be no place in the 26-man party for the versatile full-back despite England missing Trent Alexander-Arnold and Lewis Hall through injury. Instead, Reece James, Kyle Walker, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn and Myles Lewis-Skelly were given the nod ahead of the Spurs man.

Tuchel's decision has proved to be quite the talking point, with his call to include players such as Walker and Jordan Henderson also dominating the headlines. Maddison also missed out on the cut despite hitting 11 goals this season and delivering some top showings since returning from injury in February.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Tottenham's game at Fulham on Sunday, Postecoglou had his say on Tuchel's decision over his two players.

"I’m not across it," he said. "I’m pretty critical myself when people question my selections because every manager has all of the information they need.

"Madders, in a really challenging season for us, has grinded his way through and his quality has really come through in the last few weeks — especially when we have been able to give him a spell (rest) every now and then. Again, last night I thought he was a real catalyst for us in an attacking sense and also worked hard for the team.

"Djed has been super this year. I always feel with these things, particularly with national team selection, it’s never a kind of thing where you just draw a line through it. I have no doubt if Djed keeps performing how he is and Madders keeps working hard I’m sure Thomas will be looking across the board at his squads over the next period and I’m sure both of them will be in the frame."
