Arsenal's final Premier League points tally predicted with clear Liverpool reality
by Mark Wakefield · football.londonA supercomputer has provided a fresh prediction on Arsenal's chances of winning the Premier League.
The Gunners closed the gap on leaders Liverpool with their 1-0 win over Chelsea at the weekend. Arsenal are now in the midst of the March international break and do not return to top-flight action until early next month.
Fulham at the Emirates Stadium will be Arsenal's next Premier League game on April 1 after the upcoming round of international matches this season draws to a close. Liverpool will be in action 24 hours later as they host Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.
Arsenal now have nine matches to try and close the gap on leaders Liverpool and leapfrog their Premier League title rivals. Mikel Arteta's squad will be fully aware that the Merseyside outfit are heavy favourites to be crowned champions, but will still be in the race for the title as long as it's mathematically possible.
Opta Analyst have provided an update on the total number of points they expect Arsenal to achieve this season, and whether or not they will win the league title as a result. They have crunched the numbers and argue - despite the Gunners beating Chelsea - they will still finish second place in the final league standings.
The prediction states Arsenal will finish with a total of 77 points (76.92) after their 38 league fixtures. This is enough to finish second, but not enough for them to overtake Liverpool, who are predicted to be crowned the champions with 89 points (89.41).
Arsenal also, apparently, have just a 0.87 per cent chance of winning the Premier League title from their current position. This is compared to the 99.13 per cent likelihood for Liverpool, with no other clubs deemed to have any chance of winning the league.
Nottingham Forest (68.01) are predicted to finish in third place, while Manchester City complete the top-four with 66 (66.06) points. Newcastle are fifth in the predicted table - with 64 (64.26) - which could be enough to qualify for the Champions League next term.
