Cristian Romero shows true Tottenham colours with telling Thomas Frank admission

Cristian Romero has insisted he never wanted to leave Tottenham amid constant rumours linking the defender with a summer exit.

The 27-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid this summer and it was uncertain whether the centre-back would be playing his football at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the 2025/26 season. With Ange Postecoglou departing after the Europa League success in May, Thomas Frank was appointed and one of the Dane's biggest priorities was ensuring the Argentina defender stayed put.

In the end, Romero signed a new four-year deal with the club and was appointed captain by Frank. Speaking ahead of Tottenham's Champions League clash with Villareal, Romero admitted he is "very happy" at Spurs.

The World Cup winner said: "Sometimes in football, stuff comes out on social media and in the press in general. I never said I wanted to leave the club. Nothing ever came through me to that effect.

"The most important thing is that what people say here at the club and what I say. People like the manager and the president here. It's important what they say, not anyone else. I'm very happy here. Tottenham for me is a family, one big family. The first day that I arrived here, they gave everything to me.

"I'm really happy since Thomas has arrived. He took his decision to lengthen my contract, to extend my contract. I was happy at the club. I like the manager that has arrived. I like the way that we're working, the way that we train together. Of course, always things can improve.

"That's what we always try and do. That's what we have to do, day to day. But I think everyone is taking the right decisions here at the club, at all levels, to make sure we're going in the right direction to achieve success. I'm very happy here and that's the key."

Romero is expected to start against Villarreal on Tuesday and Frank will be keen to get off to the best possible start in Europe. With games against PSG and Borussia Dortmund to come, three points against the La Liga side could be vital.

"Big thing, hugely looking forward to it," Frank told reporters. "Hearing the Champions League anthem, that will be the moment. Now it's about preparing for it."

He added: "It's a new experience tomorrow in many ways. We played in the Championship with Brentford at Griffin Park in a small stadium. Tomorrow we will be in one of the best stadiums in the world playing in the Champions League."
