Crystal Palace player ratings vs Aston Villa - Eze shines and Guehi dominates in FA Cup semi-final
by Tom Coley · football.londonCrystal Palace are through to the FA Cup final after beating Aston Villa 3-0 at Wembley Stadium. Goals from Eberechi Eze and an Ismaila Sarr double booked a place against either Manchester City or Nottingam Forest in next month's showdown.
Watched on by Oliver Glasner, Palace defended resolutely and had Dean Henderson to thank for getting into such a strong position. Had Jean-Philipe Mateta converted with his penalty in the second half then it might have 2-0 earlier.
It was Eze's goal on the half-hour mark which got this game going, though, after what had been a quiet start. Marshalled by three excellent centre-backs. Palace showed just why their fans were signing about 'super Oli Glasner' all afternoon.
Here is how football.london rated the players.
Dean Henderson - Kept Palace in the game with three big saves either side of half-time. His stop to deny Ezri Konsa is better than it looks given the proximity. The John McGinn one was simple compared to the others and the full length dive to tip Digne's effort away was inspired. 9
Daniel Munoz - Struggled to make an impact in the first half but did well to limit McGinn and Watkins on his side. Holding his width he was key to Palace's tactical plan, just didn't bring the usual quality when in possession. Will take a defensive win from seeing Digne go off early as Villa tried to make a breakthrough. 6
Marc Guehi - Organised the defence as a leader. Patrolling a disciplined line and keeping things compact. Did well in wide areas and gave nothing away in possession either. Rock solid from the captain in a true team performance. 8
Chris Richards - Extremely strong in the air and worked well with Guehi to keep Villa's crosses out. Seemed to be a magnet with his head. 8
Maxence Lacroix - Some nice pieces of defending early on, cutting out a through ball and shepherding one for a goal-kick, looking composed and setting the standard for his full 90. Made a big block from Asensio at the end of the first half and let very little past him all day. 8
Tyrick Mitchell - Got done one-on-one against Watkins early but grew into the game and provided an outlet high and wide on the left. Should have scored to make it 2-0 but missed with his right foot and slipped over. Not his best game but still made a timely interception and clearance late on. 6
Adam Wharton - Went under the radar but was always on point when he was involved. Needed to anchor the midfield and added physicality. Always seemed to be in the right place with Kamada to shut things out. 7
Daichi Kamada - Picked up a lot of scraps and loose balls in the midfield. Was energetic in his closing down and helped Palace compete in a key area of the pitch. Kept Palace ticking and showed great creativity to pick out Sarr with a delightful cross with 10 minutes left. 8
Eberechi Eze - Had barely been involved before scoring but lit up this game with a moment of magic. Found his feet after 20 minutes when turning sharply to set Mateta through and then went even better to fire past Martinez with an outrageous goal. Showed great feet to get through for the penalty and was working hard without the ball too. Crucial to Palace's chances in the final. 8
Ismaila Sarr - Struggled to get into the game before scoring but made up for that with a decisive strike from distance. Missed from Mateta's cross in the first half but in fairness it was blasted at him and a very hard chance. Came up big when Palace needed it and grabbed his second of the game late on on the break too. 8
Jean-Philipe Mateta - Like Eze, Mateta took his time to get to grips with things but once he did there was nothing stopping him (other than the post). He blitzed past Konsa on the left and caused chaos when closing down the ball in the buildup for the opener. The penalty miss is a blemish on an otherwise typically bullish performance. Put in an exceptional defensive effort to keep things tight. 7
Eddie Nketiah (On for Mateta, 77') - Not on for long but did manage a shot on target. N/A.
Will Hughes (On for Wharton, 87') - N/A.
Jefferson Lerma (On for Eze, 87') - N/A.
