Bruno Guimaraes sends Arsenal emotional message as Newcastle star shows true colours

Bruno Guimaraes has shown his true colours following Newcastle United's 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. The 27-year-old midfielder played a crucial role in the victory at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening, lifting the Magpies' first major trophy since 1969.

Dan Burn fired Eddie Howe's side ahead just before half-time with a brilliant header. Alexander Isak doubled Newcastle's lead shortly after the break before Federico Chiesa pulled one back in the final moments of stoppage time.

Despite a late siege from the Reds, they couldn't find an equaliser and Guimaraes led the Magpies to glory. Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, the Brazil international broke down in tears and said: "It's all for these fans.

"They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history. We can now say we are the champions again. This is one of the best days of my life. I don't have any words.

"It's the best day of my life. For them [the fans] it's like the World Cup. People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club and it's one of the best days. This is unbelievable.

"This is my second home. We are making history. Some day when I leave this club, I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to [Alan] Shearer. He text me before the game. I'm so emotional today."

Newcastle raised eyebrows when signed Guimaraes from Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022 for £40m. The Brazilian had been heavily linked with numerous big clubs before penning a deal in Tyneside, so his arrival signalled the new Saudi owners' intent.

Even after signing a long-term contract at St. James' Park, Guimaraes continued to attract interest from Arsenal. When quizzed on a potential move to the Gunners by Sky Sports in March 2022, he explained why he chose to join Newcastle.

Guimaraes said: "I did speak to some other clubs, but the only concrete offer came from Newcastle and I really wanted to come here. I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League and on top of that it was the start of a new sporting project for the club."

Then, in June 2024, speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, Guimaraes said: "Look, my future, to be honest, is in God's hands. I have a contract with Newcastle, I'm very happy, as I said, I know how much they like me.

"I know everything I've been doing for the club. In short, I have a contract, I'm happy. I don't know what can happen, we know everything about Financial Fair Play, but what I can say is that I feel happy."

Flattered by interest in his services, Guimaraes added: "'Obviously it's very nice to have your name linked with big clubs, it shows that I'm doing my job well, but I'm not worried about it at all. As I said, I'm happy at the club. I'm very happy, so let's see what happens.

"I'm not in any hurry, I'm happy, and it's up to God, let's see what happens. It was a good season, even though the club had a lot of injuries, a lot of suspensions, in short, I think it was a great season for me, one that will stay in my memory, and I hope to have more seasons like that."
