Mikel Arteta provides Gabriel and Jurrien Timber injury update as Arsenal face Real Madrid wait
by Sam Truelove, Tom Canton · football.londonMikel Arteta has provided an update on Gabriel Magalhaes after the Arsenal defender was forced off injured against Fulham.
The 27-year-old appeared to suffer a hamstring injury just 10 minutes into the Premier League clash on Tuesday evening. The Brazilian was replaced by Jakub Kiwior after seemingly tweaking his hamstring while chasing back to stop a counter attack.
Arsenal did go on to win the match against Fulham, with goals from Mikel Merino and Bukayo Saka enough to see off Marco Silva's men. The Gunners travel to Everton on Saturday before welcoming Real Madrid to north London for the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday, April 8.
After Tuesday night's win, Arteta was asked to provide an update on Gabriel and also his teammate Jurrien Timber, who was forced off late into the game after earlier picking up a knock to his knee. Speaking to the media, Arteta said: "With both of them, because they are two players in this team that never want to come off.
"Gabi felt something in his hamstring. We don't know how big that is and with Jurrien as well. He was already struggling very early in the game. He managed to continue, at some point he couldn't. So that's the downside to it." On Timber, Arteta clarified: "Jurrien was a knee [injury]."
Gabriel and Timber will be assessed by Arsenal's medical team on Wednesday, with tests determining the extent of any injury. Ben White missed the clash against Fulham after picking up a "little niggle", while Riccardo Calafiori is expected to be out for a few weeks with a knee injury.
On losing the four aforementioned players, Arteta said: "You can imagine with those four players in the defensive line in one week. So Calafiori, Ben White, Jurrien and Gabriel Magalhaes. We have still another four that are so bloody willing that they will do their job."
