Ange Postecoglou gives Rodrigo Bentancur update after injury scare in Tottenham vs Liverpool
by Alasdair Gold, Rob Guest · football.londonAnge Postecoglou has confirmed that Rodrigo Bentancur went off with a head injury in Tottenham's 1-0 win over Liverpool on Wednesday evening. The midfielder sustained a nasty injury in the opening minutes of the Carabao Cup tie and had to leave the pitch on a stretcher.
Lining up in the box as Pedro Porro swung a corner in, Bentancur attempted a stooping header and immediately hit the deck. Porro saw his teammate lying face down on the ground and sprinted over to him, with a number of players doing likewise after seeing Bentancur motionless on the floor.
Receiving treatment for just shy of ten minutes, the 27-year-old exited the field on a stretcher and was replaced by Brennan Johnson. At half-time in the cup tie, Spurs provided an update on Bentancur via their social media channels.
"We can confirm Rodrigo is conscious, talking and will go to hospital for further checks," read the update from the north London club.
Speaking in his post-match press conference following the 1-0 win courtesy of Lucas Bergvall's late winner, Postecoglou was pressed on his player and spoke about his injury.
"I don't want to speculate because I don't really know either," he explained. "All I know is he was conscious when he came off.
"Obviously it was some sort of head injury, but he was conscious when he was coming off the field. And he's been taken to the hospital for observation. But I'm not really clear on how it happened."
When asked if he will follow up on what happened, he said: "Again mate, it's not my area. Unless I get a doctor out here, I'm not going to speculate because it's just not fair on people around him. But it was a head injury. And there was concern from players out there so obviously there was something going on."
On the win and the scare involving Bentancur, he said: "Yeah very proud. Again, we had to deal with some adversity tonight. We started the game really well I thought. Then obviously we lose Rodrigo, and in the way it happened, it was quite distressing to see a teammate go down in that manner.
"Again, we had to compose ourselves and deal with that and re-organise. Super proud of the players. I have been all along. It hasn't been through the want of trying that our results haven't been as good, it's certainly not been on them, it's just that we haven't been able to get the consistency to get the results that we need.
"Just proud that they feel good tonight, that they get the rewards of their hard work. Our fans as well, we've put them through a tough time, I thought they were outstanding tonight. We haven't achieved anything, but I think just that feeling of having a victory against a top opponent in a big game, really pleased for everyone."
