Premier League release statement after Liverpool decision as Arsenal title race takes fresh twist

The Premier League have released a statement following a controversial VAR call in the early stages of Liverpool 's meeting with Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal will be watching on intently in hope of an upset that could gift them a route back into the title race. Their own match this weekend was also marred in controversy due to a questionable penalty awarded in favour of Everton in the 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

In the opening minutes of the game between Liverpool and Fulham at Craven Cottage, a mistake from defender Ibrahima Konate gifted the hosts an opening. Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher attempted to make amends but appeared to wipe out Andreas Pereira in the process, while Virgil van Dijk made a challenge on Rodrigo Muniz.

Referee Chris Kavanagh did not point to the spot and waved play on before both challenges were checked and cleared by VAR. Much to the frustration of Fulham boss Marco Silva, who made his feelings clear to the fourth official.

Clarifying the decision on social media platform X, the Premier League said: "The referee’s call of no penalty to Fulham following a challenge by Kelleher on Pereira was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed a coming together and not a reckless action. The VAR also checked and cleared the incident between van Dijk and Muniz."

Fulham were then dealt a further setback as they fell behind just minutes later. Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister charged forward with the ball and unleashed a strong effort from 20 yards out that was too much for Bernd Leno in the Fulham goal.

However, the hosts were quick to respond as Ryan Sessegnon put his side back on level terms a little under 10 minutes later. Former Gunner Alex Iwobi then provided the Gunners with a lifeline in the title race as he fired them in front, which was closely followed by a third from Muniz to make it 3-1 before half-time.
