Ange Postecoglou could consider two Tottenham changes vs Liverpool after positive injury update
by Rob Guest · football.londonTottenham will be looking to make it a week to remember by collecting all three points against Liverpool on Sunday. Defeating Southampton 5-0 last weekend and getting the better of Manchester United on Thursday to secure a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, Ange Postecoglou's side will be intent on making it three successive wins.
As things stand, Liverpool are top of the Premier League table after 15 games but they could go into Sunday's 4:30pm kick-off in second place if Chelsea win at Everton beforehand. The encounter against Liverpool represents a real test for Spurs and it promises to be a very entertaining game as was the case last season.
Tottenham will once again be without a handful of players but there is at least some positive news on the injury front with Destiny Udogie expected to return. Postecoglou is hopeful that Timo Werner can take his place in the squad after missing out in midweek due to a fever.
"Hopefully. We'll see, the boys are coming in now as it was a late night," he said on the possibility of Werner returning. "Timo was unwell yesterday so we've got 48 hours or so before the game and hopefully he will recover. The plan is Destiny should be ok."
So what changes could Postecoglou possibly make for the game against Arne Slot's impressive side? football.london takes a look below.
Destiny Udogie for Djed Spence
Postecoglou did mention ahead of the Manchester United Carabao Cup game that Udogie would only be in a position to play the one game this week. After missing out on the squad on Thursday evening, the Italian may immediately return to the starting XI in place of Djed Spence.
It would be incredibly harsh on Spence to drop out of the team following two standout displays but Postecoglou and his staff will need to take the full-back's fitness into consideration. Due to a lack of game time this season, three successive starts for the former England Under-21s international may be a bit too much for him for a fixture of such importance.
Spence is a great option to have on the bench, though, especially as he has demonstrated in the past two games how influential he can be at either right-back or left-back.
Brennan Johnson for James Maddison
Brennan Johnson has started the past two games on the substitutes' bench and Postecoglou may feel it is time to bring him back into the side. After a busy week following the Southampton and Manchester United fixtures, the Spurs boss could do with adding some fresh legs into the side as Liverpool are going to be a very tough test.
Postecoglou unfortunately is short on experienced options right now but Johnson can offer the team fresh legs in the final third. As it's highly unlikely that Dejan Kulusevski or Son Heung-min will drop out of the starting XI, James Maddison could possibly be the player most at risk if the boss decides to select the winger.
That in turn would allow Kulusevski to move back into midfield and Johnson to operate from the right flank. However, Maddison has impressed over the past week and the boss may want to ensure he remains in the team.
