Cole Palmer shows true colours with honest admission after breaking record for Chelsea

Palmer enjoyed the most prolific match of his career but left Stamford Bridge feeling as though he could have put Brighton to the sword even more brutally

Cole Palmer believes he ought to have scored more than his four goals in Chelsea’s victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. The 22-year-old became the first player in Premier League history to net a quadruple in the first half of a match.

It means he has now scored six goals in as many league matches this term, with no player eclipsing his 42 goal contributions in the Premier League since the start of last season. However, Palmer himself feels that he should be topping that list outright.

The Chelsea attacker missed several great opportunities to net further and will perhaps rue the fact he remains four goals behind Haaland in the top scorers’ chart. Speaking to Match Of The Day after full-time, he said: "I should have had five or six!

"When I missed the first chance I was upset but with the way they played and their high line I felt we'd get more chances. The manager set up a good game plan, we knew how to attack them with first-time passes in behind.

"Brighton are a good team, pass the ball well. They play similar to us. Three points is what we needed and that is what we got. I try and play every game the best I can."

Working for broadcast media on Saturday afternoon, former Arsenal striker Theo Walcott compared Palmer to Arsenal great Dennis Bergkamp. As per BBC Sport, he said: “There’s nothing more I can really say about Cole Palmer. I am speechless. All four goals are brilliant too.

“His elegance. His beauty with the ball. His composure at such a young age. He has grown into his own at Chelsea and he is the main man.

“He has got a bit of finesse, Bergkamp, [Robin] Van Persie about him and they weren’t bad at all. You can’t leave him out of any team, and I am talking about England too.”

Reacting to the Bergkamp comparison, Palmer said: "I know he is a legend in the Premier League but I didn't really watch him, I was too young. I have seen clips, he was a top player so thank you Theo Walcott!"
