Tottenham's five-point summer transfer plan amid Marc Guehi bid and Johnny Cardoso clause

by · football.london

The summer is going to be a pivotal period for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to right the wrongs of this season. A term that promised so much after a good first campaign for Ange Postecoglou in north London, Spurs can still finish 2024/25 on a high by lifting the Europa League trophy in Bilbao come May.

However, things have not gone to plan in the league as Spurs currently sit 14th in the Premier League table after 29 games. Injuries have played a key role in Tottenham's woes this term but they have lost a number of games through bad performances even when they have had limited players in the treatment room.

Active in the January transfer market with the permanent signing of Antonin Kinsky and loan additions of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel, Johan Lange and Tottenham have plenty more to do in the summer as they plan for the years ahead. So which positions should Spurs be looking at strengthening ahead of the 2025/26 campaign? football.london takes a look below:

Full-back cover

Additional cover at full-back could be on Tottenham's shopping list this summer as they bid to ensure they have sufficient options. Previously looking like an alternative to Destiny Udogie was needed, Djed Spence has excelled playing as a left-back for Postecoglou and he may now have even leapfrogged the Italian in the pecking order.

Spence's versatility is such a great asset for Spurs but strangely he does look better playing as a left-back rather than in his natural right-back position. For that reason, another player to challenge Porro could be the way to go in the transfer market.

Centre-back

Tottenham have sufficient centre-back options at their disposal but the issue has been keeping them all fit at the same time. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have spent large chunks of the season in the treatment room, with Radu Dragusin joining them in there at the end of January after sustaining an ACL injury.

Danso's loan move will become permanent in the summer and Luka Vuskovic will finally join the club in the summer after turning 18 back in February. Amid a late move for Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi, who is now of interest to Liverpool, in the January transfer window and speculation regarding Romero with a Real Madrid switch, Tottenham could do with bringing in another centre-back before the end of the summer.

Defensive midfield

The priority for Tottenham in the summer transfer market has to be the arrival of a No.6 due to their issues in the position. Real Betis ace Johnny Cardoso could be the player of choice there due to an agreement struck between both clubs following Giovani Lo Celso's permanent return to the Spanish club last August.

Tottenham have some very good midfield players at their disposal but the arrival of a top-quality No.6 could help take them to the next level. Spurs do have an option to sign the United States international in a reported two-week window in the summer for €25million (£21million).

Additional winger

More quality out wide certainly wouldn't hurt Tottenham as they attempt to build a formidable frontline. One player heading out of the door looks set to be Timo Werner come the end of his loan spell, with Tel's temporary move possibly set to become permanent going on Postecoglou's comments on the Frenchman last month.

It remains to be seen if Yang Min-hyeok will have a role to play at Tottenham next season or if another loan spell away from the club would be more beneficial to his development. Given Son Heung-min's age and his mixed form this term, Spurs could really do with planning for the years ahead as there will come a point when they have to replace their captain.

Southampton ace Tyler Dibling has been linked with a move to N17 and a transfer away from St Mary's looks a real possibility with Saints heading back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

New striker

Tottenham have had a real shortage of options up front this season due to Richarlison's injury woes and Dominic Solanke's spell on the sidelines. As the Brazilian has really struggled to put together a consistent run in the Tottenham team due to a variety of injuries during his three seasons with the club, the ex-Everton man could potentially bid farewell in the summer.

Tottenham cannot afford to leave themselves too short in such a key position again and another striker is required. One of Dane Scarlett or Will Lankshear can then provide further cover up front, with Tel also an option there if he is to join for good.
