What Alexander Isak said about his Newcastle United future after Arsenal transfer question
by James Quinlan · football.londonNewcastle United striker Alexander Isak has been speaking about his future at the club as he continues to be linked with a move to Arsenal. The Gunners' struggles in the attacking department this 2024/25 season have been clear for all to see.
No outright No.9 was bought by the club last summer, culminating in the unfortunate situation where Mikel Merino plays as a makeshift striker whilst Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus have missed multiple months of action through injury.
Therefore the foundations have been set for a pivotal summer transfer window in which Mikel Arteta finally gets his hands on an ideal central forward of significant quality. Having scored 23 goals in all competitions so far this term - the latest being the strike to hand Newcastle their first domestic trophy in 70 years and on track to beat his tally of 25 last year - Isak has firmly cemented himself as one possible option.
Away on international duty this week with Sweden, he has now been quizzed by fotbollskanalen about his Newcastle future amid links to Arsenal, Liverpool and a host of sides across Europe.
"There’s not much to say, really. I’ve commented on my situation and my security in Newcastle several times," was the striker's plain and simple fresh update.
"It’s been written how much I love the city and the club, how well I feel there. I’m not thinking about the future. I just want to perform for Newcastle.
"Now we won the cup, but we want to finish strong and reach the Champions League games. That’s where my focus lies.
"There is no reason for me to think about anything else (other than Newcastle). I am enjoying myself incredibly well at Newcastle. The only focus I have is on playing."
Listing the Gunners' possible rivals for the 25-year-old's signature, the Swedish publication mention Liverpool, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich as per reports across England and Europe. Asked further if this is all building up the summer transfer window, Isak's honest response was: "I don’t know much, to be honest. From within the club and from our side there are absolutely no discussions. It’s just full focus on playing for me."
And finally with the alternative that he stays at St. James' Park, even more so on the back of his Carabao Cup final heroics there have been whispers of a new contract offer being prepared by Magpies chiefs.
"It’s the same there, really. There is a lot of writing outside but within the club no one is talking about anything like that," he said.
