Chelsea hit with fine and warning after controversial Newcastle clash

by · football.london

Chelsea could be handed a fine by the Premier League after picking up too many bookings in their clash with Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues made the trip to St James' Park to take on the Magpies in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, in what is also their last match before Christmas.

Enzo Maresca's side faced an uphill task to get anything from the contest after Nick Woltemade had put Newcastle 2-0 in front by the 24th minute.

Woltemade's goal was given onfield and, so too, was his second after being checked by VAR for a potential offside.

Reece James then got Chelsea on the score sheet in the second half with a long-range free-kick, before Joao Pedro equalised for the Blues on Tyneside.

With Chelsea being forced to settle for a point in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle, they are also expected to be handed a fine by the Premier League.

Chelsea picked up seven yellow cards during the stalemate at St James' Park, with Alejandro Garnacho, Malo Gusto, Robert Sanchez, Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos and Pedro all shown cautions by referee Andy Madley.

Maresca was also shown a booking by Madley in the first half, which took the total number of cautions shown by the referee to Chelsea up to seven.

Newcastle had three of their players given yellow cards by Madley, with Fabian Schar, Yoane Wissa and Lewis Hall all getting booked.

This would not be the first time that Chelsea have been handed a fine for disciplinary reasons this season.

The Daily Mail reported that the Blues received a £25,000 fine from the Football Association in September for picking up too many yellow cards (six) in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, which also included Sanchez being shown a red card.

Chelsea's next match will see them take on Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on December 27, with the draw with Newcastle leaving them in fourth place in the Premier League table with the remaining fixtures this weekend still to be played.
