Arsenal handed fresh Alexander Isak transfer scenario after sudden change and future hint

by · football.london

Arsenal will have watched Newcastle United's victory over Liverpool on Sunday with plenty of glee.

The Gunners' title rivals have had a nightmare week. Arne Slot's side lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain before seeing their dream of a domestic double end at Wembley Stadium in the Carabao Cup final.

Liverpool are almost certain to pip Arsenal to the Premier League title this season, but any faint hope of a dramatic collapse will have risen at the sight of Slot's tired-looking team slumping to another defeat. Another positive will have been the performance of Arsenal-linked Alexander Isak.

The Swedish striker netted Newcastle's second goal to give Eddie Howe's men a 2-0 lead. Isak has proven to be a player who can perform on big occasions which is just what Mikel Arteta's team need.

However, another alternative scenario may have arisen on Sunday. Could the joy and celebration of Newcastle winning their first domestic trophy in 70 years whet his appetite for more silverware success at St James' Park?

Few supporters in football will have been as jubilant at Wembley after winning the League Cup, and the Newcastle players were well aware of it, judging by the scenes at full-time. Howe's players will have sensed the relief at having finally ended the long wait for a trophy.

And the question will be, what can this Newcastle team do now after ending their hoodoo? Isak may have a better chance of winning bigger trophies at Arsenal and elsewhere, but that may no longer be seen as a sure guarantee.

Newcastle have now won a trophy more recently than the Gunners and will be confident of challenging for more silverware next season as well. Suddenly, the Magpies have become a much more attractive proposition than they were before Sunday's final.

While PSR constraints will always be a barrier, what's to say that Newcastle won't be able to compete for the league title next season if they get their summer recruitment right? Isak may want a new challenge, but if the Magpies kick on from their League Cup win, he may be tempted to stick around for a little while longer.

It comes after Isak appeared to drop a hint about his future in the build-up to Sunday's final. Suggested that he can fulfil his ambitions at St James' Park, the forward told our sister title Chronicle Live: "That's why I came here. As I have said, I am not really thinking about the summer yet.

"I have said many times that I don't really think too much about my future. I have said many times I am happy here and we are competing for titles which is what you want as a football player. We have been to one final and now we are in another one."
