Six Premier League clubs ex-Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti could join after Real Madrid claim
by Bruna Reis, Sam Smith · football.londonFormer Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is rumoured to be departing Real Madrid at the end of the season.
The Spanish giants were knocked out of the Champions League by Arsenal earlier this week, a disappointing result given their substantial investment in pursuit of a title they've won 15 times.
Should Ancelotti leave Madrid, he'll have several options on the table. A return to the Premier League, where he's previously managed Chelsea and Everton, is a possibility.
Here, football.london has taken a look at six potential destinations for him.
Everton
Ancelotti might feel he has unfinished business at Goodison Park. His return to Madrid in 2021 was inevitable, and he left Everton on amicable terms. Of course, that was under previous management, but Everton's new owners would likely welcome Ancelotti back.
However, David Moyes has made an impressive start since his return and doesn't appear to be going anywhere soon.
Chelsea
Enzo Maresca may continue into next season, but there's growing dissatisfaction among Chelsea fans due to the team's performance in the latter half of the season. Maresca had Chelsea playing some fantastic football before Christmas, even challenging Liverpool for the Premier League title.
But a young and inexperienced squad have since lost momentum.
Ancelotti managed Chelsea from 2009 to 2011, and he's one of only three managers to lead the club to a Premier League title. He could be the man to do it again.
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham could be a plausible landing spot for Ancelotti, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Ange Postecoglou's future beyond this season. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy might find himself in another managerial hunt come season end.
Ancelotti would be an attractive choice, given his successful track record with youthful squads. However, he would require the level of support that hasn't always been forthcoming for Tottenham managers.
Liverpool
Only two individuals have managed both Everton and Liverpool. The latest, Rafael Benitez, didn't fare well or receive much affection during his second stint on Merseyside.
Yet, Ancelotti might just be able to charm the Liverpool faithful. While it seems unlikely that Arne Slot will depart anytime soon, many managers have been shown the door following disappointing starts to title defences.
Ancelotti has previously been linked with the Anfield job. The idea of Ancelotti at Anfield dugout may seem far-fetched.
Nottingham Forest
If Forest secure Champions League qualification and Nuno Espirito Santo struggles at the start of next season, ambitious owner Evangelos Marinakis won't hesitate to aim high when seeking his next manager.
A club steeped in history and backed by substantial resources could lure Ancelotti, much like Everton did in 2019.
Leeds United
Leeds United, another highly ambitious club seemingly destined for the Premier League, could also be a potential destination. Under the guidance of Daniel Farke, the Championship leaders are five points ahead of third-placed Sheffield United with only four games left.
Marcelo Bielsa's tenure at Leeds didn't quite hit the mark in their second season after their 2020 promotion. The club faced an unfortunate relegation in 2023, leading to Bielsa's dismissal and Jesse Marsch's appointment.
However, following a more optimistic first season, there were whispers of setting sights on European competition. It's possible that Ancelotti could be the one to guide Leeds back onto the European stage.
