Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal transfer latest as 'agreement' reached amid Chelsea 'concern'

Arsenal have submitted their first official bid for Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres, it has been claimed. Mikel Arteta's side are in the market to sign a new No.9 and have identified the Sweden international as a top target.

Gyokeres, 26, has been in sensational form for Sporting this season, having scored 52 goals and provided 12 assists in 49 matches. He is one of the most sought-after attackers in European football right now, and Arsenal want to secure his signature in the summer transfer window.

In fact, Correio da Manhã report that Arsenal have made their first offer - anticipated to be £63.5million - to sign Gyokeres. It's added that the Gunners have 'everything agreed' with the Sporting striker.

However, Sporting president Frederico Varandas sees this as a first proposal and believes he can get more. Gyokeres could win this season's European Golden Boot and it's thought that could increase his valuation.

While Arsenal are leading the race and confident of getting a deal done, the Gunners are understood to be concerned that Chelsea could charge in and pay his £84.5m release clause.

Sporting are anticipated to add a collection of bonuses, some easy to achieve and others harder, like the Ballon d'Or, in an attempt to add more cash to any transaction.

Arsenal failed to bring in a striker last summer but want to rectify and solve that issue during the summer transfer window. The Gunners lack of an out-and-out goalscorer was clear to see in the Champions League semi-final second leg defeat at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Arteta's men created a number of chances against PSG but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. When asked about whether that is an example of why the Gunners need to strengthen up front, Arteta said in his pre-Liverpool press conference: "Yes, but that's very volatile. And regardless of the players you have, it happens.

"Nbody can predict when you're in the semi-final in Barcelona, if any of you could predict who was going to score, how he was going to score, it's impossible.

"It's the right-back that I played with, he scored a goal, he has the best chance in the game, he missed it, the centre-back that is left-footed scored with the right-foot there against us, Hakimi, that's for sure.

"He shouldn't be in the game the last 10 minutes of the first leg, so he could not play the second game and score when the expected goals are 0.07. It's a lot of random things in football."
