Marc Cucurella reveals Chelsea dressing room reaction to Nicolas Jackson red card vs Newcastle

Marc Cucurella has revealed that the Chelsea dressing room was 'disappointed' after Nicolas Jackson was sent off against Newcastle United. The 23-year-old striker sent for an early bath during the first half of the Blues' 2-0 defeat at St. James' Park on Sunday afternoon.

John Brooks initially cautioned Jackson following an aerial collision with Sven Botman. But, the Video Assistant Referee adjudged the Senegal international to have committed a 'serious foul play offence', so a pitch-side review was requested.

After watching the incident back on the monitor, Brooks upgraded the yellow card to a red card. Jackson will now serve a three-match ban, meaning he'll miss upcoming clashes against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.

Speaking to club media after the game, Cucurella revealed that he and his teammates were 'disappointed' and 'upset'. The Chelsea defender said: "We are disappointed.

"We know it was an important game, and we lost. We are upset. Now is the moment to show character. Everything we have been building towards, we need to show now.

"We need to forget this game, take the positives, we need to be proud of our effort when we played with ten men, and we should be happy with our effort."

Cucurella added: "We played very well at points, and we were in the game until the end, and we created chances. Now we need to forget this game because we have an important game on Friday."

On the final two games of the Premier League season, Cucurella said: "Every game in this league is tough and the table shows it's still tight. This is one of the best leagues in the world.

"I think we are preparing for this and we need to show we can play under pressure if we want to achieve our objectives. We need to play the game that we planned and show we are ready to play in these types of games."

Speaking to reporters after the game, Maresca also expressed his disappointment with Jackson. As quoted by Sky Sports, the Chelsea boss said: "The red card has affected the game, no doubt.

"In this stadium against this team it's already complicated and if you give them one extra player it's even more difficult. But overall I think, especially in the second half, we had three big chances. With 10 players it's not easy.

"In terms of the red card, I think if the referee decides for a red card, it's a red card. The only thing is in some different stadiums, sometimes it's more the noise that decides if it's foul or not.

"And then with Nico I didn't speak [to him], it's not the moment. Probably in the next day we're going to speak with Nico..."
