Filip Jorgensen hurt his right eye during Denmark Under-21s' 2-0 victory over Iceland on Tuesday evening and actually lost vision for a while, football.london understands.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper, who signed for Chelsea in the summer transfer window in a £20million deal from Villarreal, was taken off during his country's win after a collision that left him with a pain in his right eye. After the game, Steffen Hojer, speaking to Bold, provided an update on Jorgensen.

"It is crazy how unlucky he is," Hojer said on the Chelsea goalkeeper. "Now that quota must be used up."

He added: "It wasn't planned. Instead, it's a semi-bad habit we've got into with changing goalkeepers. He got hit down there and wasn't quite at his best. We decided to take him out, so we didn't have to go back to Chelsea with something or other.

"I don't know how he's doing. But I don't think it's something that people should be worried about. We just didn't want to take any chances."

Jorgensen has played understudy to Robert Sanchez so far during his time at Chelsea. Enzo Maresca has used the Danish goalkeeper in cup competitions but he is yet to feature for a single minute in the Premier League.

From Jorgensen's point of view, though, he will be wanting to play more than the four appearances he has made so far. "As a boy from Sweden who watched a lot of football, I always knew about Chelsea and what a big club they are," the Sweden-born Denmark international said last week.

"And the project they are doing is very good. That is why I wanted to sign.

"I have enjoyed it very much, even more than I expected. Everyone has been very welcoming. With the facilities and everyone to help you train hard and get to the highest level, it is a dream for someone like me who loves to train and develop.

"This year I want to play as much as I can, win the Conference League, win titles, and get better every day."

Now the club's medical team will assess Jorgensen and his eye injury ahead of Chelsea's trip to Liverpool at the weekend. Reece James, who returned to full training this week, will also be assessed.
