Tottenham player ratings vs Liverpool - Bergvall, Dragusin, Gray, Spence and Kinsky brilliant
by Alasdair Gold · football.londonTottenham won 1-0 against Liverpool in their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg and you can find our Spurs player ratings below.
Ange Postecoglou handed new signing Antonin Kinsky his debut in goal just days after his move from Slavia Prague in a deal that could be worth around £12.5million with add-ons. Spurs had Rodrigo Bentancur back from suspension but James Maddison and Pape Matar Sarr out for the same reason.
Lucas Bergvall impressed in the midfield against Newcastle and the 18-year-old Swede got another chance to start with 17-year-old Mikey Moore was back on the bench for the first time in a couple of months after recovering from the virus while January arrival Yang Min-hyeok was among the substitutes for the first time.
Spurs lost Bentancur just six minutes into the game after he hit the ground hard following a low missed header and needed to be stretchered off.
Both sides looked for an opening and Tottenham thought they had it on 76 minutes when Dominic Solanke slotted home from Pedro Porro's curling pass but after a VAR check it was offside with Stuart Atwell explaining it on the pitch and heard over the speakers as part of a new trial.
Tottenham did score though and it was Lucas Bergvall's first goal for Spurs. It came after a great run from Solanke before he turned and teed up the 18-year-old Swede who fired home into the bottom left corner.
Here are our Tottenham player ratings from the victory:
Antonin Kinsky
On his debut, his first test came with a difficult bouncing ball that Dragusin left for him and the young keeper knocked it up and over the onrushing attacker's head before catching it in a calm bit of play. His distribution was excellent in the first half but he did fumble a shot just behind him which could have been disastrous had he been closer to goal. Did make a big save with his arm to deny Nunez in the second half and again from his header. Overall a terrific debut and a clean sheet and the defence trusted him from the very first moments. 9
Pedro Porro
Had a big chance to score early in the second half but chipped it wide in front of Alisson. Did well defensively on the whole against Liverpool's attack. 8
Radu Dragusin
Forced Alisson into a low save in the moments before Bentancur went off. Made a goalline block to deny Alexander-Arnold. A top display in the centre of the defence. 9
Archie Gray
Ridiculous that he's an 18-year-old midfielder playing in defence every three days or so at the moment. So composed and so tactically aware. 9
Djed Spence
Another excellent display down the left and he really is challenging now to keep his spot for the longer term. 9
Rodrigo Bentancur
Was only on the field of play for six minutes before hitting the deck awkwardly and coming off on a stretcher. N/A
Yves Bissouma
Picked up a yellow card but was excellent otherwise to keep Liverpool at bay for long periods. 8
Lucas Bergvall
A busy display and tackled Alisson early in the second half to set up Porro for a chance. Picked up an unfortunate first yellow card and should have got a second but was fortunate play was waved on. He took full advantage by slotting home from Solanke's pass not long after. Got a full game (fortunately) in his legs and he's adapting so quickly. 9
Dejan Kulusevski
The older Swede had been ill and he doesn't quite look his self at the moment but that's still better than most. 6
Dominic Solanke
Another excellent battling performance. Thought he'd scored only for VAR to rule it out for offside but then he teed up Bergvall soon after following a perfect, strong run. 8
Son Heung-min
Struggled to really made an impact although he worked hard down the left. 5
Subs
Brennan Johnson
Did lots of defensive work and ran so much after coming on early. Didn't do enough at the other end though. 5
Timo Werner
Replaced Son for the final stages and didn't contribute much other than giving Liverpool something to think about. 5
