The 10 academy players Ange Postecoglou could select in his Tottenham squad vs Hoffenheim
by Rob Guest · football.londonAnge Postecoglou's Tottenham squad for Thursday's Europa League showdown against Hoffenheim will certainly have a youthful look about it. Currently having ten stars in the treatment room at present but possibly having Rodrigo Bentancur available for selection once again this week, the north London club will unfortunately be without a further four players for the game in Germany.
Djed Spence, who has been in excellent form since coming into the team, is not able to feature as he is not part of Tottenham's European squad, with Sergio Reguilon also in a similar boat to his fellow full-back. January arrivals Antonin Kinsky and Yang Min-hyeok will also have to watch on from the stands as they are not registered to play for Spurs in Europe after only linking up with the Lilywhites at the turn of the year.
Due to the amount of players who are not able to play against the Bundesliga side, Postecoglou will bolster his squad for the game by calling on a host of the Spurs' talented academy stars. The head coach has already done this a number of times throughout the team's European journey in 2024/25 as clubs are able to 12 substitutes in UEFA competition rather than the nine permitted in the Premier League.
Last involved in the Europa League against Rangers at the start of December, Postecoglou had Malachi Hardy, Alfie Dorrington, Callum Olusesi, Luca Williams-Barnett and Will Lankshear to choose from on the bench due to a lack of senior players. Four of the quintet could be selected this week at the PreZero Arena, with Dorrington now no longer at the club after joining Aberdeen on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Other youngsters who may be involved include Luca Gunter, Dante Cassanova, Maeson King, Tyrese Hall, Oyindamola Ajayi and Mikey Moore as they all feature on Spurs' B List for the competition. A start could even possibly be on the horizon for Moore after his excellent cameo appearance off the bench at Everton last Sunday.
Introduced for the final 17 minutes of the contest, the teenager had a part to play in Dejan Kulusevski's goal and he also got an assist to his name after whipping in a fine cross to the back post that Richarlison converted. At a time when Spurs are desperate for luck and need to get back on track, Postecoglou could do a lot worse than to unleash Moore as the 17-year-old has no fear and could prove to be a pivotal figure in the final third due to the qualities in his locker.
Postecoglou does have the option to add a few more academy players to his matchday squad if he wants due to the rules regarding the B List. Club-trained players who were born on or after January 1, 2003 are allowed to be considered for selection but they must have been with Tottenham for an uninterrupted period of a minimum of two years to be eligible.
Europa League participants are allowed to register an unlimited amount of players on the B list during the campaign, with the necessary paperwork having to be completed no later than midnight (CET) on the day before a game. Any further additions to Tottenham's B List will be confirmed on UEFA's official website ahead of the game.
