Viktor Gyokeres transfer latest - £85m deal, Arsenal stance, Chelsea interest, Man Utd reunion

by · football.london

Viktor Gyokeres continues to be heavily linked with a transfer to the Premier League, after establishing himself as one of the most exciting strikers in Europe. The Sporting CP striker emerged as a target for the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea last summer, with Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca eager to bolster their attacking options.

Gyokeres remained at the Jose Alvalade Stadium, though, and he's fired the Lions to the top of the Primeira Liga. The Sweden international, who sees his contract expire in June 2028, has featured 23 times in the Portuguese top-flight this season, scoring 25 goals and providing five assists.

While Arsenal and Chelsea may fancy their chances of securing his signature, Manchester United has emerged as another potential destination after Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag as their head coach. So, with that being said, football.london has rounded up everything you need to know about Gyokeres, and a potential move to the Premier League this summer;

Gyokeres makes transfer decision

According to Portuguese newspaper Record, as quoted by the Mail Online, Gyokeres has expressed a desire to leave Sporting in the summer transfer window. The report claims United have joined Arsenal and Chelsea in the race for the Swede's signature.

It's said that Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on Gyokeres. Mail Online adds the striker has an £85million release clause in his contract - but he could be allowed to leave for around £68.5million.

Arteta disappointed by transfer failure

During the January transfer window, Arteta regularly called on the Arsenal board to bolster his squad following injuries to numerous players. Despite publicly asking for reinforcements on several occasions, their head coach's requests ultimately fell on deaf ears, leaving him disappointed.

Arteta said: "We had a clear intention which is always, when a window opens for us, to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can make an impact. With players injured, we have been impacted and we haven't achieved it.

"We are all disappointed in that sense but, as well, we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that as well. I think that we were.

"It's in the profile, a player that we believe can make us much better. Financially, there's a lot of ways, and a lot of things that we must stay in the lane that has taken us this far and from there try to improve."

Amorim history and Man Utd option

In November, The Sun claimed that Gyokeres is keen on reuniting with Amorim at United. The report suggested that the Swede is all set on a Premier League move, and he believes that teaming up again with the Portuguese tactician would be 'the best move' for his career - even if it means turning down Arsenal and Chelsea.

Shortly after replacing Ten Hag in the hot-seat at Old Trafford, Amorim ruled out any offer for Gyokeres - or any other Sporting player for that matter - in the January transfer window. He said: "I won't [sign Sporting players] in January, that's what I said.

"I don't know about the summer. The first point is to hold on until the summer. Sporting's players are very good players, I don't know, we'll see. I know the phenomenon of football. especially in England, and I know how things change.

"I can talk about [Mikel] Arteta, [Ange] Postecoglou, and how things went well, how they went badly. What will dictate is how the first game goes, with a win or not. Then we'll see."

Gyokeres breaks silence on failed transfer

After the summer transfer window slammed shut, Gyokeres opened up on his failed move to the Premier League. Speaking with Swedish publication Sport Bladet in September 2024, the Swede admitted suggested that Sporting asked clubs for 'too much'.

Gyokeres said: "They (Sporting) wanted most of the starting players to stay and held us tight. That's how it turned out, but I enjoy Sporting very much, so for me it was no problem to stay.

"Of course, you want to play at the highest level.

"It [his release clause] was probably a bit too much, because nothing came of it. Of course, it's a lot of money, but we'll see what happens next window. Nothing happened and it feels like I had a pretty good season.

"So yes, that's probably why there was simply no move. But that's what Sporting thinks I'm worth, and you have to respect that. I enjoy myself very much in Sporting and can't complain about anything, so it's absolutely no problem for me to stay. Of course, you aim to test other leagues and a higher level, but I have no stress."
