Arsenal's next five Premier League fixtures compared to Liverpool amid title race twist
by Kieran King · football.londonBukayo Saka scored on his return to action on Tuesday as he helped Arsenal beat Fulham 2-1 and close the gap on leaders Liverpool to nine points at the top of the Premier League table.
The Gunners, buoyed from a 1-0 win over Chelsea before the international break, started on the front foot and created chances to go ahead, with Declan Rice, Ethan Nwaneri and Jurrien Timber trying their luck.
However, it took them until the 37th minute to break the deadlock, as Mikel Merino gave the Gunners the lead. The Spaniard's deflected effort flew past ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
As Arsenal looked to turn the screw and put the game beyond Fulham, Saka was introduced in the 66th minute. It marked Saka's first appearance for 101 days after recovering from hamstring surgery.
And less than seven minutes after his introduction, Saka found the back of the net. The 23-year-old ghosted in at the back post to head home from close-range after Gabriel Martinelli's flick across.
That gave Arsenal some breathing room, and although Fulham pulled one back in the 94th minute through Rodrigo Muniz, it was too little too late and the Gunners held on for a 2-1 win.
It's a result that moves Arsenal to within nine of Liverpool and gives them a glimmer of hope in the Premier League title race. While Arne Slot's Reds boast a game in hand - the Merseyside Derby against Everton on Wednesday - Arsenal still have to go to Anfield and could make the run-in very interesting indeed.
