Nico Williams has been linked with a move to Arsenal in the past but has explained why he has a close connection to his current club, Athletic Bilbao.

Arsenal were mentioned on the rumour mill as expressing an interest in signing Williams last summer as they were tipped to strengthen their forward options. In the end, Williams remained with the La Liga club despite reported interest from a host of clubs after helping Spain win Euro 2024.

Williams' contract with Bilbao runs until the summer of 2027, after previously extending his deal back in December 2023. The forward continues to be linked with a move away from the Spanish outfit, scoring nine goals across 36 appearances so far this term.

The rumours linking Arsenal with a move to Williams have not gone away since last summer, but now the forward has offered a hint about his future. The 22-year-old has explained the connection he has to Bilbao, indicating that a move away from the La Liga club may not be straightforward for Arsenal to get over the line.

“This relationship we have at the heart of the club is incredible. Everyone respects everyone else, which is incredible," Williams said in a recent interview with France Football.

"This atmosphere, I’ll never have it anywhere else. I decided to stay because of that. I took the decision I thought was the right one. I’m happy, and I’m trying to do my best."

Williams plays on the left wing for Bilbao, which is a position in the squad Arsenal have been tipped to be in the market for reinforcements when the transfer window opens. The Gunners have also been heavily linked with a move for a new striker, and it remains to be seen what plans the club has for the summer.
