Man City 115 charges latest as Arsenal and Tottenham compensation claim made in major update

There has been another development in the Premier League's 115 charges against Manchester City, with Arsenal and Tottenham in particular, watching developments closely.

City were charged with the Premier League with an alleged 115 breaches of financial rules back in February 2023. It is alleged that the breaches took place between 2009 and 2018. Some of the charges included allegedly failing to provide accurate financial information and breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability rules (PSRs).

Should they be found guilty of the charges, then City could face a serious punishment. What that could be is currently unknown, but could range from a big points deduction to expulsion from the league.

The situation has City’s Premier League rivals, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, watching on with interest. With that in mind, here is the latest from the ongoing case.

Legal challenge launched

According to the Times , Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham have all lodged legal notices, signalling their intention to seek compensation from Man City if they are found guilty. If the charges are upheld, then clubs could claim for loss of income due to missing out on league titles, qualification for the Champions League or other European competitions.

There is a six-year stature of limitations period for compensation claims, starting from when the documents were first published on November 5, 2018. The situation of the case means that the six-year period begins when the alleged breaches were made public.

Hearing latest

City’s hearing into the 115 charges started back in September, and was expected to last around 10 weeks, meaning it is expected to come to an end later this month. The hearing is being held at the International Dispute Revolution Centre in London.

When verdict is expected

Following the conclusion of the hearing, an immediate judgement will not be made. There is not an exact date of when we could discover the verdict, but it is reported that it could be early next year.

However, following the verdict, there is the chance that either side could appeal. That would see a new independent panel arranged, and a further delay to any conclusion, the case however, can’t go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
